WTF! Purple Rain was CDNow's best selling R&B album last week;

The Celebration and those VH-1/BET showings must have sparked Nostalgia.

On CDNOW.com, they list their weekly album sales rankings for Top 100, R&B, Hip-Hop, Rock, etc. Generally new albums are in the top 10. But last week Prince's 18-year old album was number one! Wha ... (but then again BB King is # 6 so take this for only what it's worth :- )

Here's the Top 10.

1. Prince, Purple Rain
2. Pink MissUndaztood
3. Ashanti : Ashanti
4. Van Morrison : Moondance
5. Meshell Ndegeocello : Cookie:The Anthropological
6. B.B. King : B.B. King Collection CD $4.49
7. Lauryn Hill : MTV Unplugged
8. Shakira : Laundry Service
9. India.Arie : Acoustic Soul
10.Raphael Saadiq : Instant Vintage

Also, on the Rock chart, Purple Rain was number 14, trailed by that fucking Manilow(!), and beating sales for Sheryl Crow's and Vanessa Carlton's current albums.

Go Prince.

Don't forget that cdnow was having a bunch of sales on CDs... I think the promotion ended today... but Prince was mentioned by name on the front page of their website and it had his picture, too. Purple Rain was on sale for 9.99 if memory serves me correctly, so that probably has a lot to do with it, too.
I mean, like, where is the sun?

I work for Virgin and Purple Rain is selling well at our stores right now. I also noticed that Purple Rain is the #10 soul/r&b album at Amoeba Music, one of America's largest independent CD stores.

Maybe people are tired of hating?? Maybe they are recognizing the genius again??

The scariest thing is that Purple Rain really isn't a R'n'B album at all!

Anyone see the big display of Purple Rain at Best Buy? It's been up for awhile. Reminds me when music was good, and I didn't mind buying music.

Weird...I don't get it...I must have been dreaming about the future all this time and it's still 1984 I guess. I wish these people would go out and buy other Prince albums too, like some of the rarer ones.

Like I posted the other day it's the 18th anniversary of the album and it's 1.3m first day sales.

Shops are surely very grateful to those historical successes. No other Prince album would get this treatment.

Is that a serious statement?

Purple Rain sounds like James Brown?

Time to get back in class.

Rick James??? LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!! Whewww!

Do yourself a favor: listen to Rick's entire catalog...then listen to Prince's entire catalog. It's almost like going from the minor leagues to the majors.

i think what they are saying is his stage presence live came from james brown(the dancing, band directing, and etc...)was alot of james brown influence before purple rain.
---

It's not just that. James Brown is the Father of Funk. Anybody playing Funk is essentially influenced by James Brown - BUT, that's not the whole thing in a nutshell.

Songs like "Housequake," "The Work," "Kiss," "SexyMF," "Get Off" and others have a direct James Brown influence. There is NO getting past it.

Sometimes Prince uses the 1 & 3 accented beats instead of the 2 & 4 which was traditional prior to JB and his band. Listen to the horn patterns on "The Work", listen to the intro of rhythm guitar on "Kiss"...and if you're familiar with James Brown's catalog it's easily deciphered where the percussive-like effects (with non-percussion instruments) started. James Brown's influence on Prince is WORLD'S more visceral than any Rick James influence could ever be.

The main things that Prince seemed to have in common with Rick is a rebel attitude, and double entendre lyrics - neither of which Rick James originated. Musically, they have little in common. When it comes to aesthetics, flamboyance, and musical amalgamations, Prince has MUCH more in common with David Bowie.

Umm, it was a question.nuts LOL! Now that I look over that post, apparently I thought you were saying Purple Rain sounded like James Brown. I'll read slower next time.confused Come on, nobody in their right mind thinks Purple Rain sounds like a JB song. Or that the entire PR album sounds like JB. No wonder there was so much confusion!
