I edited my post on Nep2nes bogus email thread to remove the link to moveon.org...I suggest the others that linked to it in this thread do the same if you don't want any more bogus emails from there...

If it is a fake--and sounds like it is--it's f*ckin' scary that someone would have that much time on his/her hands AND vindictive enough to write and send these out.

In other words, your average scorned Prince fan. eek

Herbthe4 put his finger on the conclusive proof that this email is a fake.

npgmc ALWAYS use princespeak (U, 4, 2 etc.)
I've had many, many emails from them since year 1, and they have NEVER used 'normal' spelling!

i emailed the npgmc about the email that we all recieved and this was the response that i recieved:

Hello

That emale is clearly NOT from us. It's pretty obvious. The internet provides endless opportunity 4 people 2 xpress their deceitful natures, and it's un4tunate that emales can b faked like this.

SMPT is a part of a server that sends mail with the domain name of the site. There is a natural flaw in SMTP that makes it possible for people to send email via SMPT via your email address.

For example, I recieved an email from lewis@cloud9mission.uk.co (my email address) telling me about a washing machine special offer lol. So I knew someone was sending mail via my system & prevented them.

Anyways, checking out moveon.com, it appears that this is run by a program that enables anyone to send mail via a different SMPT system. So either someone is hacking the NPGMC server & sending mail (mainly SPAM) via their system or moveon.com has enabled users of the internet to do the same.

If NPGMC isnt concerned about this, they should be. If they can hack SMPT, who knows what else they can hack as SMPT is often a test by the hacker before they attempt to hack the rest of the site.

It's nothing to do with SMTP or hacking servers etc. Someone can simply change the From address on an email to be whatever they like. I could send anyone an email with the from name being Bill Gates and the from address being bill@microsoft.com with very little effort. Similarly, I could also send you an email from lewis@cloud9mission.uk.co without ever accessing any other computer or server, just by changing the from address on MY system.

It is how most email programs are set up. I was going to say that this thread shows most people shouldn't post unless they have a clue, but it is the nature of the site these days, so I won't bother.

I received the same e-mail. I'm not a member of the NPGMC. Question is, where did they get all of our e-mail addresses? From the org? And what's their motive? If anything, they are only pushing Prince's merch...

It's the guy from the "anti-Prince" website that Nep2nes was crusading against last week. We got him all riled up and now he's fucking with us.

Maybe. It makes sense.

Huh? I just told you exactly WHERE they got your email address from. As someone else said, only people who display an email address on their profile has received the emails. You don't have to be intelligent to figure it out, but, oh well...
