Maybe it was an awkward attempt at keeping the tune gender-neutral? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I see the song as a message to his fans. The album Diamonds & Pearls is just that, glittery pop gems to please the boys and girls that didn't quite get Grafitti Bridge My Legacy

SOME PEOPLE--THOSE WHO THINK IT'S EVER THEIR PLACE TO CHANGE SOMEONE--WILL FIND NEW "FAULTS" WHEN OLD ONES GET "FIXED".

Like Kirk vs. Picard debates among Trekkies, it's a fact of the fandom. can U imagine if U put picard in kirk place and kirk in picard place ??? just imagine if they would switch places in STAR TREK universe. It wouldn't work. Part of what made both series work so well was the comraderie and interpersonal chemistry both had with their crews. Besides, they're also very different personalities and had different leadership styles. Apples and oranges. Personally, I think the Kirk vs. Picard debates are a bit silly. Which is exactly why I compared Prince fans' attitudes about Our Hero's gender behaviour to them. A fact of the Prince fandom is that his sexuality and gender behaviour must never be brought up (and i mean as a serious talking point, not stupid rumours) unless it's in the context of OMG Prince is teh sex! or you'll get your head bit off. It's ludicrous to me that fans of someone who's used sex so constantly as part of his public persona can't analyse his use of that as well. So, like the Great Captain Debates of the Trekkies are stupid, so is the rabid defense of Prince's sexuality by the Fams. OMG he's totally straight! Look at all the hot girls he's been with! This is worst lyric Prince has ever written. It's an otherwise great melody ruined by inspid words.

Even a lyrical genius will sometimes just resort to a line that simply rhymes and kinda works.
He's come up with some of the most profound lines in music ever. I'm sure we can forgive him for the odd one or two tacky rhymes.
