But when I give my answer my heart drops because in my opinion it's missing the point about what Prince is all about. I mean if your going to grow some roots grow it from the best and that what he did. Stevie, Sly and the family Stone, George Clinton, JB, Jimi to name a few. But what Prince did was amazing he blended all of them into a new funk and the sound was all his own. So in the end the answer is JB for me but no one can come close the rays of this man, the one and only Prince. He's taken it higher. Funkier is one petal on this man's flower, what about all rest?

Bootsy played in James Brown band first, so you could say he learnt a lot from the funkmaster, I'd say NO...

Bootsy played in James Brown band first, so you could say he learnt a lot from the funkmaster, I'd say NO... Bootsy and Catfish were already doin' their thang before James picked them up. Oh and James didn't let Bootsy experiment with all the bass effects and stuff.... It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

I managed to watch a couple of clips of JB on Youtube in his prime. One was him playing Sex Machine and Get on the Good Foot on french TV. The one where he gets everyone to stand up before he counts the band back in. The other was from the Boston Concert in the 60's the night MLK was murdered. The clip has him performing There was a Time. Both of these are the funkiest things I have ever seen.
Prince can be very funky also, but James in his prime is without peer IMHO. Prince however is so much more multi-dimensional than James which is reflected in his style(s) and music.

Right now Prince is probably more funky then James Brown, i mean, James Brown is about 70 now or so? i have seen recent live footage of James on TV, and its toecurling to watch, his singing sounds like some grumpy dog, he cant barely dance anymore, and his musicians and background singers do their best to hide that flaws.
I personally think James has lost ´it´ after releasing ´living in america´, that was a watered down, discofied version of his original ´funk´, it went downhill after that, mediocre albums, him getting too old to actually pay off during live performances. But when you look back, in his heyday, live at the apollo, his string of funky hits in the early seventies, James was maybe not the inventor of funk but definitely the most funky man on earth. Alltough Prince can be extremely funky at times, even lately, witness the version of ´the work´ on the Vegas cd, Prince has always had a much broader musical scope then James, George Clinton or even Sly, that means that while funk is one of the main ingredients of Prince music, Prince is definitely not solely a ´funk´ artist. But at this moment, James should better retire and live in some town for older people in florida, and Prince is indeed ´more funky´ then the godfather.
