83-86 when he used the linn drum with interesting patterns, wierd production, rock-bluesy guitar, made some great side projects and was funkier live.

I missed the eras where he kept his mouth shut, and pumped out albums, and maxi-singles. Please god, let history repeat.

MISS most? the Come/Gold era. he really seemed to have found a way to breathe new life into his creativity. musically, it's not his greatest (85-87 is, i'd say), but he really seemed to get back some of that fire when he was recording that stuff in 93 and 94. it was the last great period of his career, in my opinion. the current one (2004-now) is pretty good too, but there isn't the same spark in the songwriting and production. There's 2 eras that I've always felt were his high points...
The 1986-88 Sign O' The Times/Lovesexy period. New band, new freedom to explore more musical directions, and an amazing body of work. The 1993-95 Come/Gold Experience period. Real energy in the music, amazing band live, and an overload of great songs.

I actually liked when Prince was dirty, considered rude, & did not give a damn what he said on his songs. That was his "I Wanna Be Your Lover" thru "1999" era. That made him mysterious & questionable on what is he going to do next. It made you wonder what the next album would sound like. He was more raw then with his music & different. Now, it's like he has the same sound.

I was looking at photos of P in the gallery between early 1980's to mid 1990's. He was sooo young looking, sometimes a little too skinny. I like the era before the mariages and personal issues. He was pretty young and carefree.

Quite right, 1999/Purple Rain are often overlooked by fans cuz they were so commercially successful. But I agree, another amazing era.

I LOVED the fact that he didn't make Purple Rain II, plus it rocked my world artistically, it challenged my perception of him as an artist up to that point. It was then that I realized what a genius he was. SOTT only confirmed it for me...

What I truly love about that Come/Gold era is the fact that Prince seemed to be at once destroying and creating what "Prince" is.
It's like he was tired of playing the old hits, tired of playing the same old game with record labels, tired of having the same expectations lobbied at him by fans and critics, and maybe above all, tired of what he himself had once expected "Prince" to be as an artist. That era represented a frustrated artist challenging his own talents by taking himself apart and putting the pieces back together in a totally different way. Not someone struggling for a hit, or wanting to be accepted again, but someone who was hungry for a pure journey; for the sheer experience of death and rebirth. At the time, with such a fierce SOUL present in the new material, and his anger turned into such a positive creative force, it really did feel like "The Dawn" wasn't too far behind. I miss the early days up through 1999. He was unpredictable, funky and always left you satisfied. Wasn't this uber-superstar yet.
