Which album(s) can you not bear to hear?

I got into a bit of an argument with a pal the other day, as this girl just would not accept that, while Prince is certainly the greatest artist since Lomax bought his tape recorder, even he has produced a couple of turkeys.

I don't know about you, but whenever I buy an album, I sit down and listen to the whole thing from start to finish straight away. Yes, I even listened to all of New Power Soul and managed to keep my dinner down. But there are one or two that I couldn't get through without skipping tracks even when I first got 'em, and to be honest I think they'll just sit there gathering dust until Jill Jones' second Paisley Park album's released.

So yes, my prize turkeys are:

3121
Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic

And I had a lot of trouble with The Truth, as well.

Bring on the flames! Take care, everybody, and mind the roads

3121, Musicology, and most of all... Rave.

I remember the first time I listened to Rave, I put it in the CD player at work, and my heart just sank. I think it was a really gloomy day too, you know when you have to have the lights on during the day... very depressing. I still have that cognitive association with that album. confused

It often takes more than 1 listen, sometimes years apart, 2 fully appreciate each and every 1 of them.
I was really diggin N.E.W.S 2day.
No complaints here. shrug

Batman is an album I could do without... and most of Graffiti Bridge... Lots of NPS and some of Rave.

I quite like 3121. There's more to be encouraged about on there than most... And Musicology... There's a few corkers on there, too.

I don't like Chaos & Disorder. I try, Lord knows I do. I know it gets bashed a lot. I don't like it. Nope. disbelief

there's no prince album that i loathe, song-for-song, 100%.

the closest would be RAVE or NPS, though 'come on' is one of my top 5 favorite prince songs and i completely forgave RAVE when he released the remixed version. shrug

Musicology is listenable and has the occasional moment of redemption. 3121 however, depresses me from start to finish. It's just shit. Really shit.

I don't know why Chaos & Disorder gets such a hard time. Into The Light and I Will are two of his best 90s tracks. I Rock Therefore I Am would be pretty cool too if it weren't for Scrappy D or whatever the fuck that loser is called. Someone shoot him!

I literally threw away Chaos and Disorder, and I never even bought or listened to NPS or Vault.

Having said that, I never listen to For You, ATWIAD sans the title track, "Tamborine", and "America", The Truth sans the first 2 songs, Rave, Musicology, and 3121.

I cannot stand, COME. To me, it is the worst thing that he has ever put out. NPS, does not even compete.

i didn't like 'for you' for the longest time, but recently - maybe a year or so ago - i gave it a listen just to see if my ear had changed, and i LOVED it. maybe when you're ready for that album, you'll get into it. i'm not sure what it takes, but i think it's a really nice piece of music for a first timer.

The Rainbow Children (brilliant album--I just can't bear to hear it)

NPS - barf

Prince - For You (sorry, but I hate that album)

The Vault - (I do like 3 songs on it, but still I can't bear to hear it)

Other than that, I think the vast majority of his work is pure genius. This makes him unlike any other artist to me.

Least favorite?

It's a tie between 'The Gold Experience' and 'Diamonds & Pearls'...

Don't get me wrong - there are some tracks on Rave that I do like, and there are a few albums I rarely - if ever - listen to, barring one or two tracks (D&P, C&D, Come, For You, Rainbow Children...). I just meant there are a couple albums, like Rave and 3121, that not even my duty as a Prince fan could compel me to wade through even once, even that first time when I got it home from the record shop!

I still think that 3121 (and possibly N.E.W.S. - I'd forgotten that gem!) are the only albums Prince has done that are 100% garbage, though. Mind you, somebody commented earlier that they put N.E.W.S. on in his class when the kids are working - I like that! Might make me see the album differently.

Oh, and while it's nowhere near my favourite, I think Batman is his single most underrated album. Vicki Waiting is my chanson du jour, as it happens!

I agree with one of the posters above, Chaos and Disorder is a hard pill to swallow...I have tried and tried and tried, but my brain keeps telling me, "Fuck You dude, I don't like it! Move on already!"

you can sip a glass of nice wine with dinner and it can make everything taste a little nicer.

boone's farm just makes you pass out and wake up with a damn headache the next morning.

Yeah I forgot that one. P marketed this album well, I think. For that reason I tried very hard to like it. It's got about 2 songs per disk I can tolerate. The rest is barf for the reson below:
