Prince's lyrics - a cut above the rest?

Although Prince is my favorite, I've been trying to find other musical artists whose lyrics are as creative and clever as Prince's and quite frankly, I just haven't seen too many. Do you all know anyone whose lyrics are on the same level as Prince's, or better?

Radiohead's lyrics are consistently some of the best I've ever heard, period. Pearl Jam's lyrics are also very good.

I think that the lyrics in Prince's more-recent work (NPS, Rave, Musicology, 3121) are lacking. Emancipation is the last CD where his lyrics impressed me.

Surely there are many better lyricists than Prince -- people who do more than talk about themselves and their personal issues? Joni Mitchell for starters. Bob Dylan for seconds. Keith Green is another.

????? Prince's lyrics are his weakest point and borderline on amateur. outside of a few brilliant songs, his lyrics are lauaghable. the fact that he was able to make so many great songs with such bad lyrics is testament to his overall songwriting abilities.

Have to agree with that I'm afraid. He has written some great songs, but oh so many others are lyrically trite. For me Prince is a 'cut above the rest' all-round, but you had to go and focus on his weakest area, didn't you?

Thankfully there are a few people who know who our great lyricists are. Prince is not one of them. His lyrics are good, but they are not "a cut above the rest".

Bob Dylan is the greatest living lyricists! I realize that many people can't get past his voice or genre of music, but if you were to just read his lyrics, you might recognize how superior and beautiful they are.

Not really. He's just such a great storyteller. As an aspiring songwriter, I can strongly assert that this man reigns supreme.

Prince is bad, but Steve is a master:

As around the sun the earth knows she's revolving
And the rosebuds know to bloom in early May
Just as hate knows love's the cure
You can rest your mind assure
That I'll be loving you always
As now can't reveal the mystery of tomorrow
But in passing will grow older every day
Just as all is born is new
Do know what I say is true
That I'll be loving you always

Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky---ALWAYS
Until the ocean covers every mountain high---ALWAYS
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea---ALWAYS
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream

Did you know that true love asks for nothing
Her acceptance is the way we pay
Did you know that life has given love a guarantee
To last through forever and another day
Just as time knew to move on since the beginning
And the seasons know exactly when to change
Just as kindness knows no shame
Know through all your joy and pain
That I'll be loving you always
As today I know I'm living but tomorrow
Could make me the past but that I mustn't fear
For I'll know deep in my mind
The love of me I've left behind Cause I'll be loving you always

Until the day is night and night becomes the day
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Did you know that you're loved by somebody?
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
I'll be loving you forever
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through
Until the day that you are me and I am you
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky

We all know sometimes lifes hates and troubles
Can make you wish you were born in another time and space
But you can bet you life times that and twice its double
That God knew exactly where he wanted you to be placed
so make sure when you say you're in it but not of it
You're not helping to make this earth a place sometimes called Hell
Change your words into truths and then change that truth into love
And maybe our children's grandchildren
And their great-great grandchildren will tell
I'll be loving you

Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky--Loving you
Until the ocean covers every mountain high--Loving you
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea--Loving you
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream--Be loving you
Until the day is night and night becomes the day--Loving you
Until the trees and seas up, up and fly away--Loving you
Until the day that 8x8x8x8 is 4--Loving you
Until the day that is the day that are no more--Loving you
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left--Be loving you
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself--Loving you
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through--Loving you
Until the day that you are me and I am you--
Now ain't that loving you
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
Ain't that loving you
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
And I've got to say always
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream
Until the day is night and night becomes the day
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through
Until the day that you are me and I am you
Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky
Until the ocean covers every mountain high
Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea
Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream
Until the day is night and night becomes the day
Until the trees and seas just up and fly away
Until the day that 8x8x8 is 4
Until the day that is the day that are no more
Until the day the earth starts turning right to left
Until the earth just for the sun denies itself
Until dear Mother Nature says her work is through
Until the day that you are me and I am you
Inside of Me, I am Free, Free to be Me.

See, the problem with this kind of thread is that inevitably there are
names mentioned that couldn't hold an umbrella under Prince's purple rain.

Not to mention those same names again, but you know who they are...
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Purely as a lyricist, Prince can't even so much as touch Roger Waters, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Thom Yorke, Johnny Cash, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, and many, many others.

He'll occasionally write truly great, poetic lyrics, but almost just as often his lyrics are overly simplistic and trite. They can't stand on their own outside of the songs they're in. Not many of them can, anyway.

What's so funny about that? Yorke is a brilliant lyricist.

I agree with most of your posts that Prince as a songwriter is good but not as good as many of the other people you have listed. But in the overall "the whole package" arena P rules. Anyones lyrics by themselves usually don't move me but combined with some whiplash guitar, some slick moves on stage and that coy smirk P kicks royal ass, no contest

Well just to make one thing clear before I proceed (to avoid you throwing tomatoes at me!), I think Prince is amazing at writing lyrics and I have never ever been touched by lyrics as much as I have been by his lyrics.....BUT, one has to admit that there are other artists out there who are amazing as well, maybe not as much as Prince, but they are amazing:

* Joni Mitchell
* Jewel
* Dido
* Outlandish (specially latest album)
* Stevie Wonder
* Janis Joplin
* Bob Dylan
* Bob Marley
* David Gray
* Sade
* Cree Summer
* Lenny Kravitz
* U2
* Colplay
* Nikka Costa
* Joan Baez
* Simon & Garfunkel
* Leonard Cohen

sure I forgot some.....

Wait, wait, wait...Coldplay?! Their lyrics are shit. You find deeper stuff on a Hallmark card.
