In All My Dreams

In All My Dreams-- Any knowledge out there about this one? Its been a favorite of mine for a long time -- it was included on this very bad boot of The Black Album I got hold of years ago. Listed to it the other day and got the shivers! It just builds and builds and... well, I needed a towel afterward smile

Any thoughts or facts to share on this gem?

ALL MY DREAMS is one of my favourite outtakes.
Here's what it says about it in Uptown's excellent 'Turn It Up' book...

Widely and deservedly considered a pop masterpiece, the Parade leftover "All My Dreams" was taped at Sunset Sound on April 28th 1985. The track is a playful, joyous, and very melodic pop number that ranks as one of the most impressive of all Prince outtakes. Like many of Prince's most outstanding compositions, the song is at once instantly memorable and highly sophisticated. It contains several different musical segments. The first portion contains two alternating melodic themes and Lisa and Wendy are featured prominently on vocals. Prince's voice is treated, making it sound almost as if he were singing through a telephone. Without interrupting the seamless flow, the song then enters a dream-like segment centred around a reccurrent fanfare-style keyboard motif. Prince's voice is heard at about half it's regular speed and all manner of sound effects appear. Wordless vocals by Lisa and Wendy function as a segue back to the bright melody of the opening section of the song.

The song celebrates an erotic fantasy centred around the phallic dream image of a submarine, which "conquers the virgin sea". Prince tells his woman that in all his dreams, he will be her teacher and that she will be surprised by all of the things he will show her when they make love. It ends with a message to never give up on your dreams.

"All My Dreams" was dropped from Parade to make room for other songs when Prince continued working on the album. It was then planned for inclusion on Dream Factory, but was consigned to the vault when that album was shelved. A portion of Prince's slowed-down speech was incorporated at the tail end of "Acknowledge Me", recorded in 1993 but not released until 1998 on the Crystal Ball three-CD. Prince has mentioned that "All My Dreams" may be released on the projected Roadhouse Garden album of archive material from the Revolution era. The project was first mentioned in October 1998 and initially planned for a 1999 release, but it has not yet been released.

Basically, if you don't like All My Dreams, you can't pretend you understand what Prince and The Revolution was all about!

(too strong?.. nah... too ...)

IF YOU DON'T LIKE ALL MY DREAMS, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND MUSIC!

(Sounds about right? Nah...)

IF YOU DON'T LIKE ALL MY DREAMS, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ART AND MANKIND AND SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO BUY MUSIC AGAIN!

(Finally... sounds very reasonable to me).

NO MORE PRINCE FOR YOU!

(Actually... I kinda agree. I made my own "radio edit" of that song for a friend, and I cut the end)

I serisously don't understand how this song has been able to bulid such a fanatical following amongst the old-skool collectors. Maybe because it was amomgst one of the earliest bootleg tracks to start circulating.

Sure, I like it. The way I also like "Big Tall Wall" or "Neon Telephone". But hell, that cheesefestn was really best left off Parade. Would have worked on "Dream Factory" quite well, but I don't care what Nilsen says, it has nothing to do with the type of aesthetics Parade excelled at.

Actually, if Prince ever wrote a song that reminds of Bananarama, "In All My Dreams" would be it.

disbelief

Here's why it's kinda cheesy...

"The song is intentionally peppy and overblown, but in that, it mirrors how most people experience boundless optimism at one point or another... Think back to your personal triumphs, when you got that girl, that man, that promotion, that deal, when the future seems so bright ya gotta wear shades... that kind of feeling. There is a place for every emotion in music, and All my dreams is the sound of boundless, mindless hope."

Yeah, it's one of the worse Prince outtakes ever. I hope it stays buried in the Vault for all time.

Awlright, I do see the point about the peppiness. Prince has always been keen to do that and whilst I am very keen on tracks like "Train", "In All My Dreams" just sounds too much like a children's song or a Cap'n'Crunch commercial - even the "dream segment" is rather cheesy and I don't personally considered that a serious showdown of musicianship.

To me the song is just an oddity in Prince's catalog. In fact it doesn't even really sound like him at all - if I wouldn't had collected boots for years and this thing would pop up in, say, WinMX I'd quite possible consider it a fake. It's that different sounding.

Hell, it's Prince's "Magical Dance".

Here's the lyrics...

ALL MY DREAMS

I’ll see U 2night in all my dreams
All my dreams
My spirit’s in flight in all my dreams
All my dreams

A submarine valiantly conquers a virgin sea
A child is born, a child is born, will U marry me?

I’ll teach U 2night in all my dreams
All my dreams
U’ll be so surprised at things U’ll see
All my dreams

Africa, Cap’n Crunch, Norma Jean, Sex and Cheerio’s
Play my record double speed, feel the climax fit 4 a king
Just fun, nothing ethereal

Here ye, here ye, one and all
That the double speed playhouse is making a call
Welcome, this is where I live
This is where I dream my dreams
2night we’ll make love until the world stops turning
U’re small but very strong
U move like a cat: quickly but gentle
So insane He caressed her in her eyes and licked her abdomen
She shivered with delight, over and over she nibbled his ear
U’d think it was wrong 2 have so much fun
He held her tightly until it almost hurt
But his hips, they moved so slowly
She wanted 2 stop breathing
U can feel every curve of her womanhood
U can see every thought in his brain
A submarine slowly moves through the virgin sea
Oh so slowly. She wants 2 stop breathing
U can feel every curve

Lisa, I’m gonna give U the brush and U’re gonna paint the side of the train

She squeezes tighter as the submarine goes deeper in depth
Into the unnavigated territory
A smile, ever so slight, appears on his face as she starts 2 cry
Until they come, 2gether, slowly
They wish 4 somethin’, as if they could see a parallel future in the sea
They do not speak
They only stare out the moment in time

Marry me 2day and 2night we’ll make love until the world stops turning
I’m dreaming of a world
Wherein there shines the sun
Wherein there lay the stars
Wherein there lie the stones
Gentle, but quickly

We’ll travel 2night in all my dreams
All my dreams
All my dreams, all my dreams

Goodness will guide us if love is inside us
The colors are brighter, the bond is much tighter
U know no child’s a failure
Until the blue sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don’t ever lose, don’t ever lose
Don’t ever lose your dreams
Yeah!

I love this song! Such a happy tune. It sounds like a musical number. I like it when Prince gets a bit whimsical. I wish I had a clearer version of it.

Whoa, I never paid much attention to the lyrics though. Thanks, Boris, for posting them! Now I want to listen to it and I'm at work! sad

It works as a vast soundscape. Saying it's overblown is missing the point. I don't personally believe it's one of his best songs, but it's a one of a kind Prince creation.

U people. Sometimes i wonder if any of u really like prince or not. Does it sound like Prince? Of course it sounds like him. Think starfish & coffee or play in the sunshine. It is whimsical and trippy. Get stoned and listen to it one night and u will get it.
