Prince has completely horrible artwork with no thought put in it. Me personally i collect the classic great albums and think prince deserves ans should of put in more effort to create great artwork for his albums. prince, PR, for you,parade, batman, 3121, TGE, Lovesexy ALL HAVE HIDEOUS ARTWORK; only an idiot would differ. Maybe you should put more effort in your posts if you want people to have a meaningfuol discussion on a topic. But by coming in here and stating your opinion as fact and then following that with a statement that basically puts down anyone with a different opinion, your not going to get any kind of discussion, as is evidenced by the responses. Sgt Pepper? You honestly think that SOTT or Purple Rain or Around The WOrld, or Parade, and especially Lovesexy don't take it even further conceptually? Lovesexy with it's anti clutter, the incredible photo of Prince in "heaven" in the presence of his "God" with the complete anti cluttered clean design doesn't hit stronger than your examples? It is a thousand times more creative/THOUGHTFUL. With all the singles in their clear cases and the simple graphic labels, it perfectly reinforced the straight-edge, clean, concept of the album and vibe. PurpRain perfectly tied the album-into the movie-into the live concert. PR's customized fonts for each song brought that pop 80's high school vibe that worked so well. The Prince Purple Rain mood is fused to the imagery of flowers, those fonts, the motorcycle photo, etc. The beat of When Doves Cry sounds like the way the album design looks.... you really don't perceive it? Now if you had cited Graffiti Bridge, The Vault, Musicology, I'd be with you. Those designs don't do anything to vibe with the music. Emancipation's art has a bad low brow flavor. Garbage? Hmmm.
Parade and Purple Rain are both excellent covers, design-wise. Both are eye catching and capture the mood and feel of the music they both contain. The cover for the Batman soundtrack is exactly what it needs to be. Lovesexy is daring, and a nice design, but I don't care much for it. While I'm a huge Prince fan, I'm also a fan of album cover art and graphic design, so I don't think you could really call me biased. Sure, everyone has different taste, but there are some covers for Prince albums that are not to my liking. SOTT and The Rainbow Children covers are my favorites though. This brings up something that I've noticed time and time again on this site: Someone starts attacking those who don't share the same opinion, using the "bias" excuse. Basically, they say "You like Prince so you're going to like everything he does", which isn't necessarily true. Hey, we ARE on Prince.org, right? Anyone who chooses to spend their time here better be biased in one way or another I'd hope, otherwise I'd question their motives for coming here in the first place. | |

PARADE is classic artwork. B/W and stripped down. Simply great, will bnever be worn out like PR, which was cool at its time, maybe it ain't no more, but not shitty.
Vault is crap, as is NPS. Don't like the plastic look of Rave, but the effort is to be felt, the font is cool, just niot my taste, except for the sheep  .

this thread is silly. i've discovered a lot of great musicians through myspace, and when I order and receive their cds, the artwork may not be up to par according to their budget maybe but the music is kick ass! who cares. i may not care for all of Prince's cd art but I rarely give it much thought because in the end its irrelevant.
don't get me wrong mike1. if you want to discuss the artwork in general about which ones were good and which ones bad, that's okay, but you seem to want to tie cd art to good music and that again, is irrelevant. [Edited 10/28/06 16:13pm] | |
