Here is more, since I do not want 2 make another Vegas thread;
http://www.thebumpsquad.com http://www.eyeonvegas.net/neweye.html We’ve known about Prince’s upcoming headliner gig at the Rio for some time now but were sworn to secrecy. Since we’re seeing it pretty regularly these days we’re assuming our death pact is done, so yeah, Prince will be signing a contract with the Rio. It’s not the headliner gig Vegas is used to though as we hear the paisley prince will only be performing once a week. Also, Prince has had plans for a Vegas nightclub for some time now, if its going to happen, expect Harrah’s Entertainment and their nightlife guru Pauly Freedman to make it a reality. Prince sat in the VIP section for the second night in a row with his lady friend at Tangerine, lounging and relaxing without the desire to get on the dance floor, being perfectly content with just taking in the sights of the club. Thanks 2 babyprince2000 4 sending this in. http://www.thebumpsquad.com Silence Speaks A Thousand Words.

Maybe the show wasn't doing well, and/or they decided that there wasn't room for them and all the Prince deal would have wanted. Maybe they just booted them b/c the Prince deal was waaaayyy more lucrative. It's all about money in business.
Oh, forgot to say, thanks Serena! [Edited 10/24/06 5:54am] You're welcome and I agree, it's not Prince closing it down, it's the Rio making a change. It sounds like his NPGMC VIP room is being brought to life and I can't wait to see it!! Yeah girl! As soon as some dates are finalized I'm planning a Vegas vacation and hope to see you there!

Prince, the awful businessman strikes again. He remembers the stellar success of Glam Slam, right? There are way too many clubs and Prince aint got the savvy to do shit with one.
So I take it he will be signing Jehovah soul acts to his label, the Watchtower annex, all done in purple. Tamar must have gotten the boot because she wouldn't convert. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I thought he would be taking over the Voodoo Lounge!
What is the capacity of the area he is taking over then? And does he really expect to fill a venue for the like of a Rhonda show? .

There's a meet-up in Vegas in April?! I'm overdue for a visit to that part of the country (heck I'm overdue for a visit back to the States, period!), plus I've got friends/family in the region... Let's see, are there any other reasons to go? "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015

Prince the Nightclub King? Details are starting to leak out about Prince's plans with the Rio. It looks like Purple One will be taking over a nightclub in the Club Rio space where he will present talent from his label and band roster. How many times Prince himself will appear to perform is unclear. Norm Clarke of the Review-Journal reports that matching the title of his last disc 3121, the club will have a cover charge of $31.21. Norm also reports speculation that 3121 refers to a biblical citation and wonders how the converted Jehovah's Witness will fit into Sin City. I actually think 3121 is a reference to the street address of the house Prince rented for recording some of that disc's tracks. But regardless, God and sex have always mingled freely in Prince's songs in ways that to traditionalists would not be acceptable for a Christian artist. As for his secular fans, they want the hits, good new songs, stinging guitar, Prince's charismatic stage presence and no more movies like "Graffiti Bridge." The problem I see with this plan is not getting people in the door for a Prince concert, but getting a crowd on the nights Prince isn't playing (which will be most nights). Prince has musically elite tastes from another era that aren't nearly as popular as his own music: classic slow jams, R&B and funk. Prince merges all these genres into great pop hits, but the audience for the unadulterated original music that inspired Prince does not overlap much with club kids. His few stabs at rap and hip-hop have been embarrassments, so I wouldn't expect much of that sort of music at his nightclub. When I was living in Minneapolis in the '90s, Prince was involved in opening a nightclub called Glam Slam. I went there a few times over the years and outside of a tiny core group of regulars, it was mostly empty, with folks wandering around hoping to catch sight of Prince. Glam Slam was created as a fantasy club out of a Prince universe of images and music that simply did not have broad enough appeal in the Midwest. Obviously, Las Vegas is a much bigger market for nightclubs, but the essential problem remains: Prince's tastes, even more than his music, are out of step with the times. As a Las Vegas headliner, Prince would be a tremendous success in Las Vegas. But his style, music and taste are all products of another era for a nightclub. Nostalgia is great for headliners with many hits like Prince but it is never a good thing in Las Vegas nightclubs, which derive their vibe by being forward-thinking and looking for the next, newest and hottest of trends. Interesting points. I guess we will see if he actually can pull it off. ----- My guess is he will run a normal nightclub, hire a d.j. to select the music and have the The Time or Sheile E perform when he is not on stage.

Prince digs Elvis, imo reading between the lines over the years. So, part of it is Prince 'doing' Vegas. I mean, Prince has had strong soul revue/'caberet' elements in his stage act since the mid-eighties, borrowed mainly from James Brown shows.
I think he's partly fulfilling a fantasy.

My question still is: why Vegas???
If i he still is a 'fundamentalistic christian' or JW or whatever you want to call it, Vegas, the city of gambling and stripshows, you would think he would see the city as some 'soddom and gomorra'. Next to that, the city also has an image of older popstars 'cashing in' near the end of their career. Í thought greedieness was not a very 'christian thing'. I mean, why not deliver a bunch of shows for a few months in a big city like New York, Chicago or LA? Next to that: alltough the message about 'presenting talents' sounds promising, i hope it doesnt mean we get all the all too familiar names like The Time, Larry, Chaka or minneapolis-sound outfit The Truth.I mean they arent bad artists, but definitely not artists whose music and sound has really evolved during the seventies and eighties. It would be a fresh thing if Prince really would show some promising, musically creative talents. Talents who mix different inluences with modern idea's and sounds, and are operating like Prince did himselve in the eighties: as a visionary. It would be great if he offered us a 'new Bjork', a 'new George Clinton', a 'new Beck' or a 'new Urban dance squad' instead of a boring copy of Beyonce or some The time-light.

I think, simply, because Vegas is tourist heaven. The only people that live there do so because they work there. So there's a constant recycling of new people eager to see the latest shows. It is sounding more and more like Prince is in partnership with the hotel, in the sense that they will have to work hard to keep bringing the punters in even someone other than Prince is performing, and I suspect they will have a hand in picking and choosing acts to fill in. That's the difference between this club and the Glam Slam clubs, there's someone else who has an interest in keeping the place busy. At the end of the day there are plenty of clubs who put on lesser-know acts to bring people in, this should be no different, with the extra factor that now and then Prince will put on a show.
