Why is Prince always dogged out?

There are very few musicians out there who've had blockbuster album CD's over their entire career, but Prince seems to be the one I hear dogged out the most for bombs. Elton hasn't made a great CD in years, but I don't hear him dogged out or criticized widely. Neither have most of the 80's musicians, including Madonna, but you don't hear the negative comments about their music the way you hear about Prince.

Why are they always dogging Prince negatively?

Is it that he doesn't know how to market himself, or does he need a good publicist?

Elton's moved on to Broadway and Madonna consistantly puts out decent music and tours.
Perhaps, because P's most familiar period was "Purple Rain" there's an expectation he maintain that level of success.

Yeah, that's really what it is, plus it all depends on who "they" is, everybody's not dogging him it just depends on who you're getting your info from.

I feel that when he changed his name to the symbol in the 90's, some people or fans lost respect for him as a crdible artist. When I ask some people about him, they say that the Purple rain album was good but he lost his mind with the name change. So Some people believe his crediblity as an artist was tarnished.

dunno about you, but i've heard all the people you've given as examples being dissed just as much, if not more than ol' boy. in comparison to elton, maddy and the other '80s folks he's still constantly getting his dick sucked compliments-wise, if you really look at things.

I hate to break this to most of you... but much of the relatively unconcerned general public does not think Prince is black! Over the years I've been asked this so many times... people think he might be, but don't really think he is...

they think he's spanish or something.

Yes, I know its seems odd to a non prince fan.

But those aren't the people "dogging him out." So they don't matter anyway.

Be specific about who is dogging him. Evidence, if you please, to support your theory??

Yeah, it's because he's black. That's why he's never referred to as a musical genius and one of the greatest pop artists and live performers of all times.

Hey, wait a minute...

Do you people honestly believe that Prince is "dogged out" because he's black? First of all, I'm not at all convinced that he is any more dogged out than any other entertainer of his stature, regardless of color. All great artists have a period of output that comes to be regarded as the "classic years" and have difficulty getting recognition for subsequent work.

I'm sure if you read reviews of recent albums by Bowie, you'll find them to be just as critical, holding them up to past glories and whatnot. I wonder if a similar question were asked at a Bowie forum, if fans would try to claim it's because he's British or because he's bisexual. And if you want to see a white artist who's been treated far more harshly than Prince over the years, check Paul McCartney.

Second, consider the fact that Prince in the nineties was basically one career killing batshit insane move after another. Taking that into account, it's rather remarkable the amount of respect he gets these days from the mainstream music industry. After he changed his name back and stopped attacking his fans, the press pretty much gave him a clean slate.

True, if you mention to the average idiot that you dig Prince, you'll probably hear mention of the symbol or some ignorant comment about his sexuality, but as someone pointed out, these are the same idiots who don't even know he's really black.

Thank God for a rational perspective.

Is MJ's downward slide because he's black? Noooo...it's his personal and legal problems. Why aren't people complaining MJ is dissed because he's black? It's clear that is not the issue.

Prince is not only a celebrity, but he's fantastically unique/different! Anyone or anything that is that much different or stands out from the rest is either absolutely loved or some even go to the opposite extreme of hating because of the differences...sad but true.

nod Whenever I introduce a friend to the Joys of Purple, they're always surprised to learn he's black. Most assume he's hispanic or asian. shrug

So I don't think that's part of it. I think he gets the criticism that he does because he's too "out there" for a lot of people, especially casual music fans. I never thought Prince was all that strange, but maybe that says more about me than the multitudes who do. lol

I've had one youngster tell me, "more people would like him if they knew he was black". I think that his styles and his vocals come across as very alienating for many people, but if they put it into the category of a "black" artist all of a sudden they can see where he's coming from and are more accepting of the vibe.

Not buying that. I guarantee you far more casual music listeners question his sexuality more than his race.

I've lost count of the amount of ignorant guys who responded to my love for Prince with something like, "Prince? That guy's a fag!"

Yes they sure do..whenever someone finds out I have a crush on Prince they are all "Oh you must like mixed guys then.." Most of the general public thinks Prince is bi racial. If I had to guess I think Prince probably wants people to think that...maybe he likes the "freedom" on not be assigned to a particular race and all the expectations on how to think, behave and act that go along with it.
