I've been into Prince since 'When Doves Cry' was issued in '84. He'd had very little airplay and only modest chart success in the UK up until then.

Since 1982. I saw him on Solid Gold and I was hooked

You had exactly the same experience as i did i was 13 at the time and i remember watching saturday morning tv and the video for 'Doves' came on and i was completely mesmerised by the whole package. I had been a fan of Adam and the Ants so i think at that time i was taken in by the image. I bought purple rain LP and have never really looked back. I bet this story rings true with a lot of people in the UK as Prince had had very little exposure up until that point. Nice memories
