Prince videos are uninspired and unimaginative. Such a pity for an artist whose music has such a vibrant, energetic life and freshness to it.
Usually, Prince videos are only ever good because of Prince himself and his natural charisma rather than due to a really creative concept. The Prince videos that are good to me are the following: When Doves Cry Kiss Batdance Violet the Organ Grinder Cream Diamonds and Pearls Te Amo Corazon Black Sweat Again, these aren't particularly great videos, but Prince's mannerisms and presence make them charming to watch. The rest are either cheap looking, generic throw aways, or just utterly ridiculous. [Edited 10/22/06 22:49pm] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

It's pretty cool. Prince grinding in a cage with a bunch of hot whores and acting like a sexually obsessed little pervert. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

That was the quote I was thinking of.... And as we know, Prince likes to say one thing and do another. Saying this following the bucketloads of unreleased videos he shot in the mid-90s. Yeah, if he only does them because he is expected to, why make all the unreleased videos for songs that were never intended to be singles? As indicated by the Kevin Smith talk, there are supposed to many more we don't know about. The only thing you can conclude is that Prince's take on videos has been erratic to say the least, sometimes he's really into the idea, other times he can't really be bothered. But I don't think anyone can say he has 'never' been interested anymore than you can say he has 'always' been interested. | |

I'd say that his comments on them being for kids was more a reflection on his status within the commercial music industry at the time than it was anything else.... he clearly gets fired up by visual representation of his music, the several movie soundtracks he's done, all the videos he's made, the TV specials yep... Back to the main point of if he makes BAD videos or not... I think the quality has ranged from often, perfunctory (Controversy, 1999), to rarely, lavish (D&P,  )... But they've rarely been BAD... Just at the side of his biggest 'rivals' in the 80s, Prince's output couldn't help but look poorer.
I guess between his heavy workload (constant recording, side projects, tours etc), his fast work ethic and low bordom threshold, it's unfair to compare Prince's video output to other acts who were more eager to spend far more attention to the promotion of one song, or project. Plus he's a tightwad.  | |
