I think you misunderstand the intent of Bell6938's thread. He wrote, "Prince Make's Bad Videos!" which, if one will note, has an apostrophe followed by an "s", making it possessive. Therefore, either "Prince Make" is a person with the first name of Prince and last name of Make who has bad videos or else Prince has a brand, a make, if you will, like a car (Toyota being a make of car) that has bad videos, the "make" being NPG Productions, which has bad videos.

From what he's said about them in the past, Prince has largely seen them as perfunctory marketing pieces, not the career-defining articles that acts like MJ and Madonna treat them as.

Secondary to the music that is.

He had just spent the entire day in the studio creating still another funky masterpiece - I can't remember the song, it might have been something for "Lovesexy"...

On this particular day, he called my office and said, "Hey, come downstairs a minute - I've got something to play for you."

Such calls weren't rare but he seldom volunteered to play something unless he was truly excited about it, so I raced to the studio. When he would play something new for you, he'd often dance around the studio, illustrating the songs nuances or emphasize certain parts by singing along in your ear so you wouldn't miss a lyric. On this day, by the third time through the high volume playback, he began shouting his concept for a video clip! I was astounded - not only had he created the song from scratch in a single day but he already had a video concept!

After the playback stopped he saw the puzzled look on my face and quizzed me about it. I said, "I can't believe you already have a video in mind".
He responded somewhat snidely, "Alan, don't you get it? These kids today don't hear music like we do! They have to SEE music. That's what MTV has done. I have to think that way."

In retrospect, it was hardly the most profound statement in the world, but it was an awakening for me - a reminder that the more experience one has in the music business, the more one's liable to get stuck in their ways of thinking.

I would say he has made some fantastic videos, and broke the ground for black artists on MTV along with MJ, but he has also made some very uninspiring videos as well. I think you can say his output quality has been erratic, I mean look at even 3121, Te Amo and Black Sweat where high quality, then Fury is just a quickly knocked out badly shot performance.

Maybe he should get Hype Williams to direct his videos

Prince has never really been that intrested in to music videos, and visuals in music. I think Raspberry Beret is Prince's best music video, it's a cool and underrated video. I also like 1999,Kiss, Mountatins and Batdance.

Prince shot Blacksweat at his house and basically stood there.Maybe he should get Hype Williams to direct his videos.

did you not read the quote right above you from Alan Leeds? creating videos obviously were important to him if that is how the audience wanted to listen to his music. Prince seems extremely interested in adapting to a changing environment in which music was also experienced visually and seems to have not only embraced it but spent alot of energy to ensure his vision of his music was produced. this isn't a knock on the quality, but the ignorant position that he wasn't interested just to defend the poor quality of his videos.

Somewhere in the late 90's (I'd like to say '97 or '98 he did an interview where he said "videos were for kids." He went on to insinuate that he only did them because he was expected to.
