The first sure sign of his genius. A couple of stinkers, but hey, it's a Prince album.
And it started one of the best runs in pop history.

Ironically, the songs on that album are the ones I listen to the most, but I don't own the album. I have some unreleased stuff from the album and I've been playing that non-stop so I decided today that I'm gonna buy it. It'll be my 2nd Prince album purchase. yay. go me. Body messager? Please

I wasn’t a big Prince fan until Purple Rain came out. I didn’t event own 1999 until the fall of ‘84 (in its entirety, I had all the singles from it though). But once I finally listened to it all the way through, it instantly became my favorite and still is as of today. Not only is it my favorite Prince album of all time, it is my favorite album of all time. Period. Noting else comes close.

This was the first whole Prince album I ever heard and I have to say right now I'm leaning toward it as my favorite. The impression it left made me obsessed and I knew I had to hear everything I could possibly hear right then.
The title track, of course, is amazing, and so are the rest - so much that I can't choose a favorite. Each one has something about it that makes me unable to decide which is the best song. I remember opening up the album to see the picture (and I was thrilled, lol: I sat there and looked at it while I listened to the album ) - this is one of the few albums, period, that I can't find anything wrong with. I can sit through the whole thing or even listen to it on repeat, though that might get me really tired of the album after a while. But I love this album...I can't even think of one thing I dislike off the top of my head. HE'S COMING AGAIN

It's funny, but u can totally tell when a thread is inspired by recent post of a subject. There has been a lot of talk of the 1999 album the last few days. I know myself have talked in DEPTH about the album in the past few days in various threads. But, I've always talked in depth about this album. Obviously, it's my fave of P's and I feel it's his best album, hands down. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

silverchild said: 1999 is an instant classic and an important chapter in Prince's career. This is one of my favorite albums! It is, in all of it's depth and scope, electro-funk Prince at it's finest. He became a genuine and prolific superstar with the release of this one and I couldn't believe when I first heard it that Prince was 10 times more dirtier and nastier than he was when he did Dirty Mind. It was notorious for the time, and it still is. My favorite cut from this album is Something In The Water (Does Not Compute). Those drum patterns and intoxicating synthesizers just takes me into another dimension.

i cant agree more!!! it was the 1st album i EVER bought(needless to say i was about 10-12 when it came out and my grandmother actually bought it for me lol) they would play 1999 every 4-5 songs on the radio station where i lived at the time. i loved it so much i asked my grandmother to buy it for me, then that was when i got Contraversy. i ,IMHO,think that 1999 was pure genious, and PR as well. Ieven liked ALL the songs on there (i have the CD since the quality of the cassette is worn out since i played it so much before CD's lol) Smurf theme song-seriously how many fucking "La Las" can u fit into a dam song

1999, the album is in my Prince Top-3 right behind Purple Rain and Sign O' The Times.
I just looove the Linn drum sound & the guitar/ bass playing on this great album Prince 4Ever.

You've all summed it up so perfectly, I wouldn't know where to begin...
I just can't imagine my Prince, or entire music, collection without this. Absolutely inspired. It sets a benchmark for his entire body of music. It took me a long time to full appreciate this; almost 10 years. I bought it, listened to it, wondered what the fuss was about, thought it too long, filed it away. What a mistake. It was literally years and years later when I pulled it out and gave it a *proper* listen. And something... clicked. I felt such a fool. I think you have to be ready for this album. Not mikek1 specifically but anyone who approaches it. You have to let it take you on its' journey. One of Princes's strongest, most cohesive and illuminating albums. Period.

Can't say much more than has already been said about this album. I was already into Prince's music from Controversy and Dirty Mind, but when I heard this I knew that I was witnessing(hearing) musical genius unlike anything that I had heard before. Probably my favorite Prince album and was the catalyst for a kind of musical awakening for me.

This album was banned from my house, so I had to have it on cassette for over a year. Not many here may remember those cassettes, but if you played too much they would heat up and stretch out. I went through two of them. To include with the aformentioned compliments, it should be said that The Time and Vanity 6 releases in the same year truly are prolific. The Time - The Time is their best in my opinion and must for any prince collection. While the Vanity 6 album is not a neccessity it's has brights spots. Shit the man wrote and released 4 albums

it's a fucking disco record. and it features some of P's best songs, ie Lady Cab Driver, and some others. Oh, the drum machine goes on a bit too long..... it was geared for the dance floor baby - or perhaps a lot of prince's tracks were originally 28 minute jams edited down to perfection.... why change it? All The Critics Love U In New York is still entertaining and mixes very well into a techno set. sort of. Oh and Automatic. And Something In The Water, and it's better than purple rain. And it's rude. And perhaps he'd heard of the Global 2000 plan of 1980 and thought that 2 billion people should be partying in 1999 like it's the end of the world (for them). who the fuck knows. bloody administrations.
