What does everyone think about the 1999 album?

First of all i have to say compared to the prince album and controversy the sound is horrible.

I think this is an amazing album but could of slightly been changed to be almost perfect.

I think the drum machine at the beginning of 'let's pretend' goes on too long and 'automatic' and 'something in the water' are also too long. Prince should of injected them songs with a bass or guitar solo becuase they get tedius.

This album could of benefited from more guitar; what y'll think?

I agree, LRC sounds distorted as hell on the album, the extended 'Dance' cut is a lot better IMO.

Best Prince album and the one that best describes the "Minneapolis Sound".

1999 the album is

Brilliant!!

It is the album that got me into Prince also. I would not change a thing to it. Though a re-master would be wonderful.

It should be a two CD set. The other CD could contain the unreleased material from that era.

I remember being pissed because he was lying on his stomach. He should have laid on his back and pulled the sheet down some more. lol

FANTASTIC and there is a guitar solo on A-U-T-omatic. Little but it counts.

1999 is an instant classic and an important chapter in Prince's career. This is one of my favorite albums! It is, in all of it's depth and scope, electro-funk Prince at it's finest. He became a genuine and prolific superstar with the release of this one and I couldn't believe when I first heard it that Prince was 10 times more dirtier and nastier than he was when he did Dirty Mind. It was notorious for the time, and it still is. My favorite cut from this album is Something In The Water (Does Not Compute). Those drum patterns and intoxicating synthesizers just takes me into another dimension.

Although Dirty Mind and Controversy were important albums 1999 was the true genesis of his genius.

He took more risks with the sound and arrangements and went even further lyrically. I mean to me Lady Cab Driver and Let's Pretend We're Married push the envelope further than Head and Sister.

And it sold more copies and paved the way for Purple Rain.

The pivotal album of his career. worship

You´re dissing Something In The Water ??? You find it too long ?

I often listen to the 13 minute rehearsal version of it because I love that song so much and can´t get enough of it, in all its different incarnations over the years...and the version on 1999 is superb, I love that cold, electronic funk he came up with back then. This album defines the Minneapolis sound and all it stood for. It´s the dawning of the Purple Era...a great collection of songs, great beats and lyrics. Somewhat like a collection of short stories.

But you´re right about the sound , my CD sounds terrible , that album needs to be remastered...I often listen to my vinyl version because the sound is better than on CD.

I was a fan of Prince ever since I heard I Wanna Be Your Lover, but this album made me a hard core fan of the man.

This was the album that made him a legitimate star in the music industry and one of my favorites.

Lady Cab Driver
Critics
International Lover
Let's Pretend
Does Not Compute
1999
Little Red Corvette

This was a fucking masterpiece.

Let's not forget this three year period of Prince cranking out hits like it was going out of style. 1999 the unreleased album in between then Purple Rain which made him a superstar.

A great one to boot.

Plus, it took me years to figure out that Lisa was answering all of his questions during his monologue. Absolutley fucking brilliant record that still holds up, and he did it all himself, overdub upon overdub. Smoke a joint and spin this bastard with some headphones and you'll hear a thousand things you never noticed before.

Back in the day, I would pull a few tubes of thick smoke, strap on my headphones and listen to this record from beginning to end. Sometimes I even miss that feeling. Honestly, name ONE shitty song on the whole record outside of the last one (and by then I was ready to fall asleep anyhow). "Lady Cab Driver", "DMSR", "Little Red Corvette", "Automatic" are pure genious. "Something in the Water" is deceptively hypnotic....It's almost like the album sneaks up on you. It SOUNDS simple, and structually it IS, but there are layers upon layers of sounds and tricky "punctuation " that catch you off guard and always come in at EXACTLY the right moment and change the basic nature of the song JUST ENOUGH to keep you rolling along with it.

In a nutshell, it's "simply complex". A masterstroke, a benchmark and a timeless classic for those willing to REALLY listen to and penetrate it. I listen to it NOW and still hear new things.

Did I mention I love this record?
