DMSR Greatest Hits

Pg195-Later in April, Prince and Susannah separated after living together for only a few months. Some insiders blames pressures brought on by problems with the new movie. "Prince had a lot of things going on, but he wasn't happy with his life at that time", says Susan Rogers. "He knew he had made some serious judgement errors in making UTCM. I came to the house one morning and Susannah said, 'Oh, we had a terrible night last night. He was lying on the floor, face down, all night, repeating repeatedly that he hated the movie'. He was miserable. It was after the film was done, but it hadn't been released yet. He knew it just wasn't happening"

Ahhh Princeee

Pg. 128-Vivacious forthright, and with a keen sense of humor, Wendy shook Prince up and made him laugh. She wasn't afraid to stand up to him and tell him what she thought. "Everyone else was more or less intimidated by him. I remember one time, it was summer, and Prince was sitting at a keyboard. He was playing with no shirt on and Wendy reached over and pulled his underarm hair. And he brought his elbow into his side, said 'don't!' and resumed playing. She reached over and pulled it again and he said 'cut it out!' And they had a mock fight, kind of slapping each other. Not even his girlfriends were that informal with him. She was the only person who was that way with him and he loved it"-Susan Rogers

LOL..grabbin his hair and Prince yelling don't and cut it out lol

Pg129-Aug 1983 First Avenue concert-Bobby Z asserts:"it was the ultimate hometown gig. It was a hot August night. It was like 90 degrees in there. Humidity was just exhausting." Using a mobile recording unit that was brought in form New York, the concert was recorded by David Leonard and David Rivkin. "I didn't know the recording was going to be an album at all", says Rivkin. "I was just trying to do a good job, recording a live concert. I think we looped a football crowd underneath, so it sounded like everybody was cheering, because nobody really applauded! They weren't familiar with the songs. It was weird, because it was really interesting stuff, but nobody knew it."

Pg129-The title track (Purple Rain) came together on the 1999 tour. Bobby recalls Prince playing the chord changes of the song during rehearsal in Cincinnati in December 1982. "It was so different. It was almost country. It was almost rock. It was almost gospel.". Matt Fink believes Purple Rain was influenced by Bob Seger. "I told Prince to do a song like that. When we were out on the 1999 tour, Bob Segar was shadowing us, playing everywhere we went. Prince said 'I don't understand the appeal of that stuff'. I go, 'It's like country-rock, it's white music. You should write a ballad like Bob Segar writes and you'll cross right over'. And he did!"

And one of my favorites

Pg. 148-With the Purple Rain album hitting number 1 the week after the film opened, Prince was enjoying a higher profile than ever before he reached the zenith of his popularity in the second half of 1984. It was exactly what he wanted. "He got what he wished for", Rogers reflects. "But unlike many young artists who might have reached that stage and just lost it, Prince had the bull by the horns. I remember one day, he was at the warehouse. He was so happy, he was dancin around. Myself and someone else both went to ask him a question, and we both said 'Prince!' at the same time. He swung around on his heel and said, 'I must be famous!'. And I looked I his face and I realized that he was famous, and that he knew he was famous and that he was delighted to be famous. I think that was a very productive and happy time in his life"

Hehee Prince dancin around…then swinging around on that heeled boot..

Pg221-back in MN shortly after Xmas, alone in a studio except for Rogers, Prince recorded a song called "Wally" that ostensibly dealt with his break-up with Susannah. Even though the lyrics don't refer directly to the break-up, the emotional statement of the music leaves no doubt as to the sincerity of Princes pain. 'I thought it was the greatest thing he had done", says Rogers. "There was so much pain that came out in that song. It was heartrending. He was just getting all this poison out of his system, all this pain. I had waited years to hear Prince do a song like this. I ached to hear him be this honest. He said 'Do you know that maladi means sickness, illness in French? Its almost like melody isn't it?' I just couldn't wait for people to hear this. Then he began to change it! All of sudden, he put on this weird percussion stuff and began to make it funky. I said 'Don't you think it was better before Prince?' Maybe we should stop' I knew he was destroying it deliberately. It was just too honest. At some point, he said, 'Now put all 24 channels on record and erase it.' I said 'No, you can't do this!' He said 'If you don't, I will.' And he did erase it. That recording will never get heard. He was feeling a deep pain and allowed it to show, but he didn't want anybody to hear that". According to Eric Leeds, "It's the only time that he completely erased a song that he had just done. The only time. That was a very, very personal song to Prince, and I don't think he had any intentions I the world of ever releasing it." Prince did in fact re-record Wally from scratch a few days later, making it less personal song by changing some of the lyrics and recording a new vocal.

The holy grail that never was

Pg188-While working at the Samuel Goldwyn soundstage (working on Parade incidental music), Prince received a visit from Michael Jackson, whom he promptly challenged to a game of table tennis, using a table that had been set up in the middle of the soundstage room. "Michael said, 'I don't know how to play ping-pong!'", Rogers remembers. "But Prince took one pad and gave Michael the other, and they started very politely volleying the ball back and forth. Suddenly, Prince said, 'C'mon Michael, get into it,' and he slammed the ball into Michael's crotch. I was rolling my eyes!' Oh god, he's embarrassing himself'. But Michael knows how to handle himself and he didn't seem to care. Then Michael started flirting with Sherilyn Fenn who was visiting Prince in the studio. Prince was pacing, but he wasn't going to get into the game of flirting back. They said hasty good-byes".
