He's only a pop-star...

... I keep forgetting. One of immense talent and originality. I get so involved, every now and again... maybe led on by himself, but, nonetheless, too involved. I expect political and emotional awareness and savvy, I expect common sense and reason. Prince is a fantsatic musician, that's all. The pop music he makes is second to none. Me and my likes should simply get off our horses-high and simply enjoy the ride.

Just been listening to Chocolate and Slaughter House. Two marvellous pop-albums. Prince at his finest.

I've merely got to get over myself, stop expecting the acumen of a genius and socio=political animal and start dancing.

Aw shit, it seems I'm lost again, 'cause this must be Myspace.

Explain.

I'm merely venting... As is my want.

Prince is a pop-star... we don't expect our sports heroes to be able to comment on the issues of the day with any relevance, why should we expect our pop-musicians to do otherwise?

It feels good when something or some1 exceeds our xpectations.
Xpect the unxpected! wink

That said, Prince is far from 'only a pop star'..
I'd say he's a very influential artist. cool

Only human, indeed... with all the foibles and contradictions therein. Let's just let him play his music and enjoy the noise.

When you truly consider the crap going on all around, it's a blessed relief to have someone as tremendously entertaining and creative a Prince around to soothe the pain.

No, he's pop. He dabbles, but, y'know... mainstream. Extremely good at it, but, ahem, mainstream, nonetheless.

No, he is much more than just a pop star. He is his own movement. Like JB, Pfunk, Motown, Beatles and more. There are those things and then there is the category of Prince. His shit is that deep and great overall. Political, sexual, religious, social, racial categories and more. All from one man. I think he was the last or at least one of the very last people in music to be something "other than justa pop star"

I think he'd like us to think that... I thought it for a while... agonised over the unfulfilled wish fulfillment I had regards his stance on world issues and the like... Prince is a massively influencial force in popular music, a fundamentally unique musician and composer; but, when all said and done, he's just a pop star and we should expect no more of him that we do of all 'celebrities'. Eye, and in Prince's case, ear-candy... nothing more.

i kinda disagree
sure he's made some pop songs, but would that really constitute him as a pop artist?
he's made some country sounding songs, does it make him a country artist lol
his main genre was funk, so im calling him a funkster... or a funk-rocker...
i have never heard prince being called a "pop-star"
sorry lol
that title on him just really urkes me

Perhaps a better tag would be 'musician' or 'songwriter'... either way, it's about time we removed levels of expectation from this man above and beyond being entertained. Whilst the music may be on many levels, the behaviour ain't: Prince is a pop-star - his behaviour mirrors many of those in his chosen profession, making him a regular professional (how boring!).

I see where you're coming from, BoySimon. nod

Prince is undoubtedly a musical genius but I don't expect every single track to be some brain slapping song handed from the gods. He's a songwriter - first and foremost. When he does release music that makes my brain go mushy and my hairs stand on end, I can't ask for anything else. It's the best! cloud9 And he's released plenty of that. wink But I'm always happy to hear what he releases - not in a fammy way, just to hear the whole spectrum of what he creates. His artistry. Some of it I like, some of it I don't, but I don't expect him to reinvent the wheel every time he goes into the studio. It's like some fans have the most ridiculous expectations. And all because he has such a strong back catalogue! Some day, people will be looking at this guy called Prince and think "Imagine being a fan of his! He seems crazy! All that different music, all those songs, the live shows, the costumes, etc etc etc. I wish I could have seen that!". We don't know how lucky we are. wink

He has just as much right to be socio-political or religious/spiritual as anybody. Or release 'dumb' pop music. I'm fine with both. If people don't like it, maybe they should create the music they want to hear. wink
