Tony M's Influence on Prince's 90's music was profound

Some of his greatest albums are peppered with Tony's raps.

And some of Tony's raps, like "The Flow" or the rap on "My Name is Prince" actually take otherwise normal sounding songs to a higher level.

Don't get me wrong, Tony is very hit-or-miss, but when he's on, that motherfucker is on!

For 2 years, partially, yes.

From 1993 onwards a resolute 'no'.

Is the world coming to an end?

Tony m CAN NOT RAP! His flow was off beat and horrible; his diction is weak and his lyrics were garbage.

HE RUINED SOME GREAT SONGS! HE WASN'T NEEDED!

The word "profound" is not one that springs to mind regarding Tony M's poisonous influence on Prince's 90s output

Snap

Prince does share some of the blame. He set out to purposely make Diamonds & Pearls a commercial success, and he did what he thought would make him hip (excuse the pun) and current, adding a rapper to his band and even hiring Michael Jackson's ex-manager, Frank Dileo, to do promotion for him. You know what? Prince got his wish. Diamonds & Pearls was his biggest commercial success since Purple Rain. In the process, he lost the respect of his established fans while gaining the attention and admiration of new fans.

Has anyone been able to make clean edits on D+P and prince to eliminate Tony's rap monologues? I'd love to hear the albums without them (and Rosie's rap on Push too) - the music was fantastic, and I don't mind the occasional backround shout from Tony, but the extended raps became a little tired.

Tony was cool...not the best rapper but it was all good. I think P needed him just as much as Tony needed P. Prince was losing us (R&B base) and the whole D&P era brought P back. I remember reading somewhere that Tony said "I am going to shove black down his throat."

I had no problems with Tony.I'm not a big rap/hip-hop fan,but for some reason,I liked most of his contributions to Prince's music.

Hmmmm, Prince said Tony was the wittiest pen in Minneapolis. The most famous Minnesotan comics I can think of are Garrison Keillor and Al Franken, neither of whom I find funny.

What does that say about the state of humor in Minnesota?!? LOL.

Much or Prince's music is timeless - in that it still sounds great when you go back an listen to it.

The Tony crap is not. And it dosen't.

I once heard from a reliable source that P would watch videos of the Act1/2 and D&P tours and comment about not being able to understand Tony...
