Which Prince album would you recommend?

I though it would be cool for us each to suggest an album to the group. It could be your favourite one, it could have a cool cover design or it could feature your favourite track so let us know your reasons for choosing.

Personally I would like to recommend Emancipation. This may not be many orger's cup of tea but as a songwritter I just cant get over the size of this production. I havnt written 3 discs worth of material yet let alone released it all in one go. Its probably the most descriptive personal album Ive heard from him too, you come away from listening to it realising how he felt at the time of writting it.

God bless

I would recommend "Old Friends For Sale".

That album is slamming and the music is rich 2 me. Even his short tracks like "There is Lonely" sounds full, unlike "New Position" which sounds stunted (even thought thats my jam! big grin)

OF4S is an album I would've never expected from him because it has a vintage sound 2 me
.
When I hear "It's about that walk", I think of Vegas or NY in the 50's and showgirls dancing 2 it.
When I hear the title track, I think of a moody gangster bar in any big city type of place and it's gotta be in black and white!
"She spoke 2 me" sounds like it could be a little bit more modern but nevertheless, I could fit it in the theme of "Its about that walk" and he could be singing about the showgirl he wants but she has a gangster boyfriend who was in the OF4S song!
"When the Lights go down" is the song about him finally getting the sshowgirl
"My little Pill" is the song about him being depressed because the mobster is after him.
"Sarah" could be about the showgirl after Prince has gotten over her (YA'LL KNOW HE CANT STAY 4 LONG!)
"extroadinary" is about the new chic he's got!

"Old Friends 4 Sale" is my recommendation...let ur imagination run away!

I would recommend The Gold Experience. Without getting into discussions over which of Prince's bands were better than another, this album contains some of the best musicianship on any of Prince's discs IMHO. I think this version of the NPG had reached an unparalled vibe with each other, they seemed to have a shared appreciation and philospophy of the funk.

This CD has aggression, power, passion, and fun. All these words don't do it justice. I love it and thats the main reason I would recommend it. smile

It's interesting the fact that most of the people are naming MORE OR LESS recent albums and not the typical classic LPs from the 80's. And by the way, CherrieMoonKisses, I liked your kinda essay on "The Vault" ... yep, that CD is really good and it's amazing how underrated it got shortly after released.

To keep on this vein, I'd name another way too underrated release: "Chaos And Disorder". It might sound strange to some of you, and I know MANY people here will disagree, but this is actually the album I always wanted him to do. The opening riff of the title track just blow me away. And the thing keeps that way all along. Yes, there are one or two tracks in there pretty annoying, but the album also contains some his finest moments as a musician/songwriter/creator: "Into The Light"/"I Will". These songs mean a lot to me.

Let's keep it coming !

the GOLD experience.

It's just crammed full of ideas.
There's the robo-funk of Pussy Control
The screaming guitar rock of Endorphin Machine
Lush ballads like Shhh

If Prince and Warners hadn't fallen out at that time
this album would've been bigger than Diamonds and Pearls.

Around The World In A day - just for the whole sound of this album.
Emancipation - because of the sheer depth of the songs available.

I would have to agree with you, Emancipation. This was a great compliation of songs because he was in love when he wrote those songs. The most intimiate to me.

For a newbie I might push "Symbol" actually. It's enough wacky but far more conservative what comes to the soundscapes than on the 80's records.

Oh, and it has rap on it.

This might be a stupid answer but i would recommend The Hits 3 CD set. Why? Because it spanns Prince`s carrer and showcases his talent as a song writer, producer, and musician. You get most of the tunes that made Prince famous (WTF is Batdance?) and I think that this is a good way to introduce a person to the music of Prince. Maybe afterwards they might go purchase a few Prince albums to increase their depth of Prince.

I agree 100%, Felt. "Sign O' The Times" is Prince's best album, IMHO. This album shows the versatility of Prince as an artist, and I recommend it to everyone learning about the man and his music. My personal favorite, however, is Controversy, because I dig the message and vibe of that album.

Peace,
JD

Graffiti Bridge is pumped up funky fun with Prince's amazing guitar wailing and mixture of majestic music. It always seems to put me in an upbeat frame of mind. i was down to two tapes to play in my car, one was Graffiti Bridge and the other, Controversy. Either was better than anything they're playing on the radio. The rest of my cassettes have broken or been eaten by the cassette player. Last week Graffiti Bridge was chewed in two. i miss it and it's made me realize how much i like going to the places Prince paints on Graffiti Bridge.
