Which is Prince's more sexually ambiguous (sp?) song? I think he mentions something specific about a female on Girlfriend, but listen to the lyrics on WYWM, and it COULD be about a dude. Not trying to bring up the ol' "Prince is gay" shit, I'm just wondering.

I think the line in When U Were Mine about wearing all of his clothes alludes to it being a man, but when you consider prince wears high heels, tight trousers and blouses back in the day, this kind of insinuates he is talking about a woman.

I have to vote If I Was Your Girlfriend as the most ambiguous, but When U were Mine i smy favourite prince song so that gets the most important vote.

Actually, IIWYG doesn't sound that ambiguous to me. It just sounds as if he's wondering if the barriers would be lowered if he was the opposite gender, making it easier for him to know the REAL person...rather than the person she wants him to think she is.

They're both sung from a straight male perspective.

When You Were Mine is about an open relationship that's finally over and she's
now with another man, but Prince still can't let her go and move on.

If I Was Your Girlfriend is about Prince wishing he had the closeness in his
relationship with his girlfriend that she has with her best friend.

Neither song actually implies any sexually ambiguousity. The only ambiguity
in If I Was Your Girlfriend is in the reader's interpretation of it's title.
The only ambiguity in When You Were Mine comes from the line "when he was
there, sleeping inbetween the 2 of us", which conjures an image of 3 in a bed,
but was probably not intended to be taken literally.
