Reminiscing about hearing a new Prince album

I don't know if anyone else ever felt this, but I remember looking forward to a new Prince CD, buying it the first day, and absolutely loving some or most of the tunes, some had to grow on me. I still look forward to hearing his new music, but it's not the same feeling I used to have during the ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT and Graffiti Bridge period.

I was excited to hear 1999 and it was worth it.

PR kinda bored me

ATWIAD after hearing RB i was like okay lets go and the album didnt disapoint.

SOTT, the single confused me cause it was really different for radio at the time and it wasnt funky or rocky just kinda wtf?

But i remember grabbing the USA Today (it was free at the university) and after reading it i skipped 2 classes and took a bus to the mall.

You hit the nail on the head. Buying these albums on their release day was an annual ritual, and every single one of those albums was given a work out, which is also something that is sadly no longer true these days. I still remember reading a 41/2 star review of GB in Rolling Stone several weeks before it's release, and how psyched it got me. And then when my friend called and said the local store was selling it the Friday before it's release, and I said "impossible, it doesn't come out until Tuesday." And he said, "Well, I bought one and I'm going to listen to it right now."
Thus I was introduced to the retail concept "breaking the laydown". Needless to say, I ran right over and was listening that afternoon.

I know exactly what you guys are talking about! I used to go crazy whenever a new Prince album was being released.I would have a hard time sleeping the night before it was released. Then, when the morning came,I would rush to the nearest Tower Records store to buy it.I remember the excitement of hearing the new songs for the first time.Sadly,in the Internet era, fans hear the album weeks before it comes out, spoiling the excitment.

It's just that in those days Prince used to be a lot more unpredictable and each album was more unique, had it's own unique sound, different mood and overall, each album was built upon a special concept. However, I think the last two albums, Musicology and 3121 are excellent, although not as strong as the 80's albums, they both include great music...still not unique in any way!

I think I bought every Prince album from ATWIAD to Come on the release date - going to the store after school/uni - and then locking myself up, reading the lyrics, repeat listens...

Even now, I try to get the new CDs as quickly as possible, but somehow the feeling is not as intense anymore. No more "woooww, wtf, what a groove" etc. Guess I get a little bit less excited about music in general, I seem to appreciate it "on a different level" than when I was younger.

But maybe it is possible that Prince has lost a bit of that fire as well, me thinks!!! At least when he is in the studio...
