Playing and reading music - extract from a thread found at lewistaylormusic.com

I thought that some of you might be interested in this post, which appeared on the forums at lewistaylormusic.com:

"[snip]... Anyways, i recieved a reply from a Mr. Jesse Hayes (as in, NPG Jesse Hayes) on a few reasons why musicians are'nt intrested in tutorial videos, or one on one instruction. I thought you'll might be interested in hearing from another top musician of the highest caliber himself.

Mr. Hayes abbreviated: "Aside from the facts that some of the best frontmen to ever weild the axe possesed minimal technical knowledge but had remarkable natural ability and feeling, (not to say they had'nt practiced for years and years before they considered themselves musicians) music is a very personal thing. As one who has the knowledge of advanced harmony and other aspects of theory, these tools are moreso vehicles that are useful in making an inspiration to create, more fluid. Whenever you get in a situation with other players...most of the time... they don't pull out sheet music...maybe a lead sheet with changes but little more. Songwriters send tapes, not paper.
As one working with a lot of artists be assured that if Larry Graham isn't available to play for Prince, Prince would actually choose the better player verses the one who can read...The better player, will just play along and listen for changes and watch Prince (#1 on his list). I encourage your learning, so keep it up, but remember nothing is more important to develop than your EAR and sense of time."

I must say that i was overjoyed to get a response from Mr. Jesse Hayes and it is only out sheer joy and excitability that i share it with you'll too! LOL!

From reading the rest of the thread, there seems to be some element of doubt about whether the person writing it was actually communicating with Jesse Hayes, Morris Hayes or Jesse Johnson.

Anyway, just thought I'd share this with you.
