Do Me Baby! Austin Does Prince: Tribute albums?

Anyone got this album? It's one of the six tribute LPs available dedicated to the man. The others being "CMO Plays The Music Of Prince" (Classical), "Party O The Times" (Various), "If I was Prince" (Experimental), "Purple Pain" (Scandanavian Punk/Grunge) and "SexyKinkyJazzySmooth" (Jazz based).

All of the above are hit and miss ("Purple Pain" simply misses) and this is no different but compares favourably. While I have no true, pure country music in my collection some of the interpretations are good. There's also a dash of blues in the mix.

Tracklist:

1. Delirious - Guy Forsyth
2. When Doves Cry - Kris McKay
3. Partyup - Spoon
4. Sometimes It Snows In April - Michele Solberg
5. The Beautiful Ones - El Flaco
6. Paisley Park - Johnny Goudie
7. Girls And Boys - David Garza
8. Darling Nikki - Christina Marrs
9. Controversy - Fuckemos
10. The Question Of U - Seela & Darwin
11. Let's Pretend We're Married - Royal Company Scam
12. The Cross - The Jubilettes
13. Manic Monday - Missile Command
14. Take Me With U - Monte Warden
15. Sexy M.F. - The Adults

There's an uncredited bonus track version of "Alphabet St" too.

I've got the Austin one, the classical, and the party of the times.
My favorite out of this bunch is the classical.
The other 2 are ok.
I think I have another one as well called Symbolism, and I really like that one. It has Tina Turner, Nona Gaye, and others.

Yeah I didn't count "Symbolism Songbook" because it's moreso a collection of previously released covers than a distinct tribute album.

The CMO classical album is good on the whole actually, very rousing.

You didn't mention Bob Belden's Manhattan Rhythm Club's 'Purple Rain' album...though I know it was released under a different title so maybe you did.

I was disappointed in the CMO album. Was hoping for a totally instrumental album but vocals appear in spots.

Call me crazy but I like Guy Fosyth's "Delirious". It's very raw & um...interesting.

Check out Spoon's Parytyup version. Pretty cool and a raw garage sound.

Is Bob's album widely available? I may have head about it yeah...

I agree CMO didn't need the vocals.

Hahaha yeah I like Guy's version of Delirious too, he's wilding out by the very end. He sounds sincerely into the music with his little banjo-like guitar. smile

I think the Bob Belden album may be a little difficult to find. It's good. Nothing mind-blowing. The songs they cover are kind of predictable...you know, the hits.

You missed a few:
*Bob belden has released 2 completely different CDs dedicated to Prince. One was called "When Doves Cry" They covered the hits. The other one covered the more obscure stuff. (Re-released under new names, I can't keep up)

*The Black Album - Done note for note by some German group.

*Symbolism-As mentioned above. But this one is mostly a compilation of previously released covers.

*Dump-That Skinny Mutherfucker With The High Voice?

Anyone know of any more?

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

He's not doing badly for tribute albums huh? Shame they're always low grade productions. Maybe one day the bigger name acts who are influenced by him will do the honours.

I forgot that Dump one yeah (People were mocking the samples on the old Org) and I had heard of Bob Belden too. I guess these are the hardest to find ones is all. They are on CD?

They are all on CD. The Black Album disc is pretty rare.
I actually listen to the Dump tribute the most. I like it because it's one guy doing everything and he is obviously a big Prince fan. The songs range from hits to obscurities. He even does Another Lonely Christmas. He's pretty faithfull to the original arangements.

Look for a Cd single by Semisonic, they do a version of Erotic City that's pretty rockin'.

George Clinton put out a CD Maxi Single of Erotic City a few years ago that is worth hunting down. There's like 3 different mixes on it.

There are lots of groups that have tried their hand at Prince songs. If you like the country flavored covers, check out the Gear Daddies doing Little Red Corvette. they were a great Minnesota group by the way.

I just got the George Clinton PCU Soundtrack this week. Cool to hear him do Erotic City (Which he inspired after all) even if his own version is too similar.

I think their duet "Paradigm" must be one of the most mysterious tracks in Prince's catalogue, the origins of it have never been mentioned in Uptown's "Turn It Up" volumes etc.

They are unknown. No info or artwork on disc or booklet, just like Prince's version.
