The infamous meeting of Prince and TTD!

THE INFAMOUS PRINCE / TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY PERFORMANCE
For years now a story has floated about of a rare and extremely exclusive performance that took place at Prince's Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota just outside of Minneapolis. I asked a friend online that had been lingering about in Prince's inner sanctum while employed at his N.P.G. shop (boutique) in MPLS around this time...and he agreed to give me his account of what occurred that night. Finally, I present to you the first-hand account of the events during the now infamous early morning jam:

Um lemme see here...I got into the party after the Diamonds & Pearls show at Glam Slam...I saw Carmen [Electra] for the first time there and LOVED her...Until she started doing those WAY over dramatic "hip hop" stupid dances she does..

Anyway.. smile I was hangin' out and Prince is there and I'm expecting that, so I'm cool...But then...I turn and WHAM! TTD is standing RIGHT THERE!!! Not saying a word to anyone if I remember correctly...He stays there for the rest of the time and then a bit later Prince starts playing in Studio C...I go in, and I see TTD after a little while come up and snag a guitar...Strums some sour notes, and P looks at him like "GET OUT!!!" TTD looks at P and just like a child kinda puts his head down and walks through a door behind them...The band played on the floor in Studio C which is actually like a VERY, VERY small rehearsal studio with mirrors all around the walls...I believe the door leads to the hall outside in Studio B...

That was the last I saw of TTD until he played First Avenue [night club] in 1995 (I think it was)...P had a special Love 4 One Another show after the gig and TTD didn't show up 'till the show ended...We all had to wait and stand still while TTD walked up the stairs with his band...Never said 'hi' or anything to the people who were giving him props for the show that night...

I've heard of this before ... but I wonder what really happened there. I mean this was just a witness from one dude, so it doesn't really need to be the right appreciation of the situation. This is just my opinion, but I don't really think P would ever look at TTD like "Get outta here!". Of course P can be rude when he's uncomfortable, but come on, everyone who got to meet him said he was charming and very polite.

...On the other hand, while TTD praises Prince whenever he can, P rarely talked on T over the years. Even now, that TTD goes indie Prince didn't mention anything about his career moves and so. I'm still expecting some props from him. Mmh...

Yeah I probably submitted this as news few years back at old P.Org.

Does P's behaviour in this piece really surprise you? It's what I'd expect from him personally. I'd be disappointed if he went over and kissed TTD on the mouth for hitting a bum note. smile

In an interview Prince was said to be one of the most charming people you will ever meet at times and at others the most bugged individual since Batman emerged from the batcave by his employees at Paisley Park. I really don't know what happened with TTD, but I wouldn't dismiss this story as being impossible. It is hard to conceive the Prince I know today doing this, but the old Prince might just have especially over some bum notes.
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

Thanks much for putting this story up man. I had completely forgotten about this!

As for all the folks who for some odd reason have to doubt every story that gets told in here, believe me, I was the one who wrote the story and I know good and well what I saw. There were no more than 20 people in that room when TTD played and I was standing face to face with him when the whole guitar thing went down.

This was my first time at Paisley Park or a Paisley Party and at this point it was years before any of the "Just let anyone in" days (which I attended every night of as well) so I paid attention to every single detail of the night.

He broke out some new songs like "My Name Is Prince" which was MUCH longer than any version released to date and "Sexy MF" which again, I remember being longer. This was a year before the symbol LP came out so it was a sewrious treat to hear these songs.

Another thing to add to the story above...
TTD and a fan were standing in the airlock of Studio C and I had to get out so I squeezed between them ducking down so as not to interfere with their conversation, and TTD RAN away as soon as I broke their contact. He seemed EXRTREMELY rude and not interested in speaking to anyone. Believe me, I would have LOVED to speak with him but I ain't one to go barge in on somene like that and get all up in their face. The guy asked him "So when we gonna get a new album" to TTD as I walked through them and he darted without answering the dudes question. RUDE.
The second time, in 1995 after the 1st Ave show he agan, was completeky rude to the folks leaving Paisley by making security hold up the line as he walked in and when folks were complimenting him on the show and basically just cheering him on, he walked up the stairs with his band and gave no sign of acknowledgement. Rude...

If no one wants to believe this stuff... No big deal, whenever real info gets posted here it just gets the shrug anyway...

I had a great time both nights, and went home with two girls the second night. wink

As a weak guitarist myself, I can empathize. TTD always seemed to be a guitarist along the lines of, say, Mick Jagger...i.e., no leads, helpful but not necessary, that kind of thing.

Love TTD though. Haven't gotten around to "Wildcard" yet. Wish they'd put it out in the US.

Maybe TTD was intimidated by being at paisley or being second fiddle to Prince
(of course). But that's probably why he was stand-offish. My situation was at a
radio station and he was completely laid back and aproachable. His conversation on the radio show can attest to his disposition.

So those minn. occasions are not fair representations of TTD.
