I think that the Prince album covers that feature his "picture" or "image" alone without anything going on in the background to give the album a theme are done too often. There's just no imagination in it! 
It's like going to the store to pick up a generic carton of "milk." Sure, I know what's inside is what I want but,...where is the marketing stratedy? Worst album art covers that come to mind: For You Prince Parade NPS 3121 On the other hand,...his best album covers with his picture: Dirty Mind (had the steel mattress) Controversy (had the newsheadlines) Sign of the Times (the whole stage theme) Intelligent people talk about ideas. -->Average people talk about things. --> Small people talk about other people. | |

Emancipation has by far the worst cover art he ever released.
The colours dont match, look ugly. The image in the booklet with all the rocks is just a pain in the eye. The computer generated images on other pages in the booklet are just plain ugly. The misusing of colours and images remind me a lot about the Oprah interview, here's a man who isnt sane, pathologic, mentally ill.... sorry to say | |

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the  album:
The early pressings with the gold foil mark on the plastic jewel case on top of the booklet were OK, but the album cover image itself is awful -- out of focus, there appear to be ant-like creatures on the ground that may or may not be Prince, Mayte and a bunch of kids, and there's a soundstage set that looks like it might fall over if Prince so much as passed gas. Looks like a screen capture from the video for 7. And not a good one. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife.
