Sorry, but the title wasn't very explicit and only reminded me of last week protest threads (so I skipped it).

well Aerogram what are YOUR thoughts on the matter?
Should Prince chill out or should he be able to prohibit this kind of unauthorized distribution of his songs and performances?

Funny thing is that "Freemyheart" has decided to quit with the prince songs ... for now atleast...but not with the covers he plays live...

I would much rather get these tracks from Prince himself, but as far as I'm concerned, this incident is simply symptomatic of his drastically reduced presence on the internet. Even the pre-club NPGOnline had more to offer in the way of free downloads than this year's site. He's got people paying $100, and he delivers one single cd in half a year...

You'd think he'd at least put a couple of songs up, either for free or just for the members... just to keep them involved with the club and perhaps even get them to wonder if they should attend the cellie next year.

But no... Not this year... We had 1+1 and Silicon... I feel like a customer at a restaurant who has only been served a pretty good salad and a tiny piece of bread, and I'm waiting for the rest of the meal to arrive, except it's taking hours and the waiter seems to have forgotten about all those who have not ordered several bottles of expensive champagne.

The NPGMC is an on-line xperience only in name. It looks like an abandoned site. I remember visiting NPGOnline and hearing a different welcoming sample every month or so. Believe it or not, this did make me feel involved as a fan and I liked to hear a bit of what was to come.

BTW, is it me or is http://www.npgonline.com/ now.. hmmm

As for the legality of what FMH.com did, of course it is questionable to do so without the artist's support, but don't some other artists tolerate this kind of friendly exposure? However, the rate at which songs were released was a bit too ambitious I think. The pace of release might well be what triggered the reaction. I am pretty sure that someone at the Park knew from day one.

Bottom line : Prince has a site, but does not use it to release music much these days. Someone noticed and filled the void... perhaps a little too well.

I may only have 1 years management experience but I still reckon I could do a better job...in fact any idiot with half a brain could do a better job.
Harsh I know...

radiohead encourages its fans to record concerts and put them up on the net...

they are actually performing new songs during shows and asking the fans to listen to them on the net...the most popular tunes will end up on their next disc...

radiohead rocks!!!

Well written Aero, I agree 100%. I've never been that into Radiohead (too depressing) but it seems that THEY have some common sense.

I agree that the way he handles this club leaves a lot to desire. Just two downloads and 1 ep, the first download everybody knows and the second is merely a promo. the cd is very short and lets people wonder if he really has some surprises waiting or not. Logical that many get pissed off by it.

The NPGMC is an on-line xperience only in name. It looks like an abandoned site. I remember visiting NPGOnline and hearing a different welcoming sample every month or so. Believe it or not, this did make me feel involved as a fan and I liked to hear a bit of what was to come.

I agree with that too. I also think the entire way the site is set up sucks heavily. It takes ages to load and then you find out that's all because he wants to make his site look al shiny and glittering, which is just a waste of bandwith and a contradiction of his supposedly newly found religious beliefs, which should make his site look much more sober, in my opinion of course.
Furthermore, it's a shame that very little news on the music, tours and other activities is offered and that the commentaries seem to vanish into cyberspace as if they were never written. That's all a big shame. The members section is even worse I think. I mean, you would expect there to be something special, but most pages offer you very little more than the general site. But if you like more waste of bandwith to make your computerscreen shine like you arrived in some golden land where everything seems for free, besides the music, you sure have come to the right place.
In short it looks nothing like a cyber paisley park, which you could somehow expect from a prince music club. But I gues not...

BTW, is it me or is http://www.npgonline.com/ now.. hmmm

that's ome freaky shit. Call the npg police! lol

I think they found out pretty soon, they know FMH. And I agree that FHM wasn't acting too smart by releasing so much unauthorised music in so little time. Also because it still may be the case that Prince wants to put (some of) those recordings into the exclusive membership package.
FMH simply moved much too fast with too much new music, which is/was intended for the club, or the visitors of the cele, only.

Bottom line : Prince has a site, but does not use it to release music much these days. Someone noticed and filled the void... perhaps a little too well.

I think the bottom line is that prince's wishes differ dramatically from the general wishes of most of his fans and that he is absolutely unclear in what his true wishes are.
And since he is one stubborn controlling mf and I dont expect that either party changes their attitude about these matters, there seems to be no other way to deal with this than the way of continous conflict.

Which is kinda sad actually.

Sometimes, when I'm in the mood for a good conspiracy theory, I start thinking that Prince is purposedly asking for an insanely high level of commitment from his fans because -- get this -- he thinks that one day fams will see The Truth and he'll have his own little sect.

Unless you guys already form a sect and yall trying to recruit me.. eek

you are already recruited, but you don't know it yet! lol

And I think Prince likes to play games with his fans. he likes to test them out, rile them up a bit, predict and then see how they react and then maybe laugh his ass off...
or cry a river... wink

To answer your question, it's more related to a bull or a martian.

In realtiy, my avatar means nothing, except maybe "here's a symbol-looking avatar". It is the ultimate existentialist feat... to make something out of nothing.

Let's see here? Prince has opposed people sharing his music on line for a long time now. Some jackass does it anyway and advertises it everywhere. Now that jackass is suprised that Prince goes after him for doing it?

I wonder how many brain surgeries HE has lined up?
