I'll say it again: Musicology. I underrated it myself, sorry to say. It's actually pretty good.

THE TRUTH! I'm not sure if it was necessarily underrated, but certainly underpromoted. It's so fantastic!

The more I listen to 'The Rainbow Children' the more I think it will become a lost classic. This album is as good as any thing else he's recorded.

I never quite understood what exactly is this big issue people have with the darth vader voice on TRC.... as if it was the most horrendous thing ever..... people, the "darth vader", "bob george" voice, whatever you wanna call it, is a weird thing, therefore it's a good thing! Embrace weird, my friends!!! Prince is the 80s was about weirdness translated into a pop context and y'all praise his beating to his own drum in the good old days... So what if he lowers his voice on TRC, would you rather have him be the pre-packaged flavour of the month? He tried that on Rave (yuck! what a mess) and fell flat as we know. So.... be grateful for the darth vader voice, free your mind and open up to a whole world of possibilities that go far, far beyond the silly issue of "oh TRC was ruined by the darth vader voice...." - that is NOTHING compared to pure gems of weird funk, phsychedelic freakouts, experimental jazz out there, decades of REALLY weird shit that grows on you, makes you question, changes your way of listening, challenges you and ultimately rewards you in ways you'd never thought possible. Complaining about the darth vader voice just sounds like y'all need to listen to more diverse stuff. And once you come back to TRC, it will all sound, I'm sorry to say, not that ground-breaking. Do not get me wrong, I DO enjoy TRC and I love Prince because he's a genre-bender, makes these wild cocktails of different musical genres and does them really well and turns them into 4-minute little gems. But ultimately, IMHO... a LOT of what is out there is far, far more advanced than P. It just doesn't make it to the charts or even get acknowledged by the average radar. And that, my friends, as we know, is a good thing these days.

Whew, that was longer than I expected!.... Sorry if I bored y'all.....

Underrated albums, then:
Newpower Soul (second half, from Shoo-Beh-Doo onwards, is fantastic)
N.E.W.S (imagine Prince improvising vocals on top of this - we'd all love it - it still grooves as it is, though)
Old Friends 4 Sale (some true classics in there)
Undertaker (why the hell did we get the VHS and not the CD?..... baffling.)

.... and all the brilliant jams and aftershows throughout the decades Prince must have soundboard recordings of, he should release them ALL - HE underrates them, that's for sure!

Underrated...IMO

Controversy (gets overshadowed by Dirty Mind)
ATWIAD (gets overshadowed by Purple Rain, but an interesting change in musical direction)
Lovesexy (gets overshadowed by SOTT, but it has a great feel)
Come (vs. The GOld Exp..no contest, but I enjoyed 90% of the album)
The Rainbow Children (message aside, I like the musicianship)
Musicology (not an overall fave, but don't you get the feeling people were expecting more?)
"Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."
