for me it was

* His fan base was mostly black for Dirty Mind/ Controversy albums when i thought it would be mostly white

* He's not a devil worshipper/ witch craft- participator { if u read MJ bios they would lead u to believe so}

* many of his albums were recorded an album in advanced { he already started recordig ATWIAD RIGHT after Purple Rain and PARADE was mostly done by the time ATWIAD was in the stores}

* He could actually be laid back and funny and NORMAL {parade era}

I didn't know that until I actually began reading the articles about him instead of just staring at the pictures.

I started consciously listening to Prince's music about six years ago, with the aid of Napster and my college library. Often when I start exploring the work of a major artist, I find that much of it is already familiar to me on some level.

Not so with Prince, and this is what shocked me. Apart from 1999 and, to a lesser extent, Kiss, all of his stuff sounded new to me. Even stuff like Little Red Corvette and the entire Purple Rain soundtrack. How I could have lived nearly 20 years unaware of something as elemental as the keyboard riff from When Doves Cry just blew me away.

What shocked me most is the number of people that still preferred MJ.

I was like damn never heard anything like that before.

The first time I ever saw him was on "American Bandstand". His appearance, gestures, and earring in the right ear shocked me. I was in the seventh grade and people had been calling me words like "gay" for about three years. When I asked around and found out what the words meant, I associated "gay" with nerdy, classical music listening, boring guys. I knew I wasn't into those things. When I saw Prince, who appeared very gay (I've always thought he was and still do) but was doing the hardest music possible, I was shocked and also pleased.

I was only 8 when I heard that song. I knew what fuck meant though.

him saying the F-word so much made me feel like I was doing something bad when i listened to his music. i used to have to listen to it at a neighbor's house across the street. my mother would have committed something along the lines of an honor-killing if she found me listening to that.
