"The vault" appreciation thread

This was one of the first Prince albums i bought, and it`s still one of my favorites. "The rest of my life" is as good as anything he`s recorded.
Who else loves this album?

I normally don't do these threads because I pretty much love everything, but When The Lights Go Down is so chill, it puts me in another space just hearing the opening, instant serenity. I also love There is Lonely, it's so low and sparse...plain fucking lonely.

I found this album at a local used CD place. It was quite the deal. Anyway, I found it half packed with some gold nuggets. Very enjoyable. What was in the other half? Nothing but dead air. It would seem he could have put a couple more tracks. But the tracks he did give kicked ass.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

I like it,I know it doesn't get a lot of love here but I don't know why! It's better than some of the official albums he released in the 90's.

nod Yeah, just think of "The black album", "Come", "Chaos and disorder" and "Newpower soul"... "The vault" is so much better than those albums

Now, now. Better than Come? Better than Black? I don't think so.

The Vault is a hugely enjoyable album, but Black and Come please me fine.

considering where it came from and what it's made up out of,
it's a cool little album. it has a nice focus and i like the
songs a lot.

"when the lights go down" is indeed a great great song nod

These songs are very different from the kind of material i associate with Prince, but that`s what`s so interesting about it.

Icicle, you don't like the Black album? Could I ask why?

Black is marvellous, superbly funky, incredibly danceable and funny as hell. What's not to like?

Don't get me wrong, I love The Vault, but Black is so much more fun.

I'm making a compilation disc for some friends and it HAS to start out with this song, it's a kickass beginning. They'll be hooked... nod

"The Vault" showed, to me, why Prince needed Warner Bros.

It had the nicest barcode of all his albums...

Just kidding.

That album had a consistency to it that others, put out around the same time, lacked. Quality control and such.

Some of the songs "When the Lights Go Down" and "5 Women" were excellent.

I always thought WTLGD would have fit great on any one of his 90's albums.

Some of the songs are utter crap (It's about that walk...yuck!) It truly is an album that would have benefitted from having the songs intended for their original albums.

Unfortunately, as fans, we were pawns in a cryptic chess match between WB (and their desire to pimp a former cash cow for them) and P,( whose quirks and desire for fans to not support his post WB releases,)whcih caused this album to slide under the radar.

Who else loves this album?

Why does his left leg seem longer than his right on this albume cover? I keep looking at it and, must be the angle.....the left thigh specifically. He seems to be centered in the chair. Not tilting his hips or anything.
