I was listening to it again today and it has to be one of the most depressing Christmas songs ever. And I absolutely love it!! I remember the first time I heard it back in 84 (I actually thought the name was Another Looney Christmas until I listened to it), I was blown away, especially with the drums coming out of the left side. I just wish I could get my hands on the extended version again. The version on The Hits irritates me because the “drink banana daiquiris ‘til I’m blind” line makes no sense without the real second verse.

Anyway, my reason for this thread we know how many of Prince’s songs have a real life story behind them. Is this another? (I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I’m new here and have always been curious)

Yes, real life story is Prince puts himself so high upon a pedistle, that he's unwilling to come down even for Christ's Birthday celebration.

I always love how they play this song on the radio around Christmas time. I mean, it really gets you in the spirit, doesn't it? Nothing says Merry Xmas quite like a song 'bout getting smashed off banana daquiris sobbing over your dead SO.

In this interview Prince says it was "a work of fiction".

I've always loved this song-it gets a play every year at x-mas time even though it is depressing.
