OH.

...and now it's time 4 me 2 get my piece in about this "long version, short version" crap.

'The Hits' basically destroyed all of the general public's knowledge on Prince's discography, and the integrity of the recordings, by butchering nearly every song, including "Adore"!

I mean... just because I'm old school, still have all of my vinyl, and my turntable, it doesn't mean that one should have 2 have that in order 2 hear and know the songs as they were released and intended.

Besides that... the photography and the design of 'The Hits' was damn near abhorred...

Glad I never bought that... but I did get 'The Black Album' CD...

I'd have to completely disagree with that!

Firstly, only ONE song was edited for 'The Hits' and that was 'Adore'.
Almost all the other tracks were presented in their original single edits,
which is the way the vast majority of the general public would be familiar
with them. Which is exactly how a 'hits' album should be... it should have
the versions of the songs that were 'Hits', not the longer album versions
which joe public isn't going to be familiar with, and has no interest in.
The single edits ARE the versions that were "released and intended".

As for the artwork and design, I actually quite liked it. It was well put
together and looked very nice. Which is more than can be said for 'The
Very Best Of', now that DID look cheap and thrown together.

I think someone else wrote that song,
can someone throw more light after looking at the credits of the B-side to Raspberry Beret ?

and Yes, he would never write a song about having 'two cigs' in his pocket because he doesn't smoke.

You're talking about the song "17 Days" there...
(which, incidentally, was recorded during the same sessions as
"She's Always In My Hair").

And yes Prince wrote that too (with some help from Wendy and Lisa).
The reason it has the line about "2 cigarettes" in there is because it was
originally intended for the Apollonia 6 album sung by Brenda (who smokes).
It was later replaced by "Blue Limousine" on the album (as were several other
tracks originally intended for Apollonia 6).

I totally agree. Greatest hits are basically samplers for casual or non fans to get a taste of an artists work; if they are still interested after that, they can go off and buy the original albums. The longer album versions on there actually give a good reason to go and do that. Non fans are likely to have heard the music on the radio, which inevitably fades songs off before the end anyway. If you want to blame anyone for 'single edits' blame radio for trying to get as many records played in an hour as possible, which is why single edits were created, ie commercial pressures.
