Vote for Prince's Symbol guitar to win People's Design Award! As I posted last week; I work at a museum and we are launching a website asking people to nominate their favorite designed object for The People's Design Award. The website is now live and yours truly has nominated Prince's Symbol Guitar. My co-workers often tease me about my Prince 'addiction' so I would frickin' LOVE it if my Prince nomination won this. (And that would say what? .)
So please, Please, PLEASE vote for it! (pretty please?) I think between the dedicated fans here, Housequake, and npgunderground it might have a chance to win! Here are the basics: 1. Go to this url: www.peoplesdesignaward.org 2. Register: You won't be able to vote until you register, which requires a valid email address. You DO NOT have to fill out your mailing address. (They are just hoping people will do that too.) 3. Browse and vote: Once you activate your account you can browse designs posted on the site or even nominate a new design—but you can only vote for ONE object! e.g. Prince's Symbol Guitar! (Unless you have 2-3 email addresses then you could conceivably register using each of them and then vote once per email address… ) To find my submission type in Prince and click 'Search Now' (I decided to only nominate one Prince thing because I didn't want to "split the vote" between Prince fans…I figured the Symbol Guitar was most iconic and also the guitar that he was most responsible for the design itself.) Please feel free to orgnote me with questions about my submission, the Awards, or the museum and thanks in advance! [Edited 9/18/06 6:11am]

no. News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so. You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

Well that's debatable; but regardless, I've seen how you and sw feed off each other and I was just trying to prevent my serious thread from going down in a blaze of crazy talk about angels and whatnot... It's all good. [Edited 9/19/06 14:43pm]

I filled out the information, but where do u go 2 enter that info??? I just checked the website and my entire nomination has disappeared! Monday I will casually ask why none of the things I nominated are appearing on the site. (I also nominated the Seagram Building & the Ford Mustang and neither of them on there either...) I'll keep you posted. . [Edited 10/12/06 12:57pm]

Since I know you all are eager to vote (lol) here's an update:
Seems there was a 'technical' glitch and all the votes and original nomination were lost so I had to resubmit everything!! I re-nominated it yesterday, and it's showing up again... But here's the catch: to anyone who already voted, you should log in again and re-vote --because of the glitch, all the first votes are not being counted. Also, when you try to revote it will say You have previously voted and may only vote once. If you would like to change your vote click the button below. Even though the picture of what you previously voted for will be the same, click Change Your Vote so that it will count. It's been hovering around #12 or #13 most of today, but I know it can do better with your help! Please vote.... PS. My apologies for all the confusion--it is our first year doing this and I guess there are still some kinks that need to be worked out.

I have become very wary of registering with any website. Every time I give out my email address (regardless of any promises on said website not to disclose my details to third parties) the amount of spam I receive increases exponentially. Therefore I will only register and give out my real email address when absolutely necessary.
The reason I'm saying this is for anyone who feels the same - it is possible to put in a bogus email address - the registration doesn't check their validity. So if you're worried about giving out your details but still want to vote, you can put in any old crap and it'll accept it. So, that's one more vote for the symbol guitar then. Sadly, it's still not in the top 5 nominees. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

I totally understand about not wanting to give out your email. I think there is a box you can uncheck so that you don't receive future emails from the museum. I don't want/expect anyone to register their email if they feel uncomfortable doing so. (I actually have 4 email addresses, including a yahoo one that I only use for online registrations/mailing lists; it really helps isolate the spam mail. ) And just as a reminder--you definitely do not have to enter your address. They are just hoping people will do that automatically.
Also, I can honestly tell you the museum almost *never* sells emails or addresses that we collect (I've never known us to do it)--occasionally we might do a 'one-time use only' list exchange with other New York museums/cultural institutions, but it's not a common occurance...and it's mainly for paper mailings. I though you did have to put in a real email though, because after you register the system has to email you an "activation" code. Finally, if anyone feels so inclined, you can register more than one email address--it's one vote per email address. [Edited 9/20/06 6:24am]

That may well be the case, it's fairly normal practice. The only reason I think it's accepting bogus addresses is I went straight to the symbol guitar and pressed the vote now button. It then displayed the registration screen. Once I'd entered my bogus email address it said my vote had been cast. I just logged in again to try it again and it said "You have previously voted and may only vote once. If you would like to change your vote click the button below." so I guess it is happy enough with a bogus email address. It also doesn't seem to require an activation code as it did let me log in. Just got back from a meeting with our Communications office...it came up that they deleted one nomination that was getting votes from a lot of fraudulent (invalid) emails. I asked how they could tell they were fake emails and they said they had ways of checking...
So if you don't want to give your valid email, I think it would be better to not vote at all--I don't want to run the risk of the whole thing getting deleted. Thanks!

Thanks so much to everyone who has voted thus far. It's currently at #6! If it moves up to #5 it will show up on the homepage when you first visit the site!
And I heard through the "work grapevine" that several Directors at other Smithsonian Museums are talking about it and some are even voting for it because they're guitar players!!! Hopefully it can keep up the momentum--there are still three weeks before voting closes...

Just wanted to push this thread back to page 1 so that maybe some new people will see it and vote. The guitar has been hovering at the number 7 spot most of the time. If you haven't voted, please consider doing so and maybe we can get it to at least #5 so it will show on the opening page!

UPDATE:
The People's Design Award website has been live for about two weeks and the guitar has been holding steady at #7 but I KNOW it can do better. I know there are enough Prince fans out there to get it at least into the top 3! Please vote for it, I'm beggin' you all, please, please, please. . [Edited 10/12/06 12:58pm]
