I know LL Cool J's "Boomin' system" uses the same music as "Hold on" but I don't hear it on "Gett off" Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

Michael B. said both him and Prince and recorded the drums and he doesn't know whose take they used. It's in the "Bland is back" threads in the associated artists forum somewhere.

According to housequake it was a Prince solo track w/ additional vocals from the npg

supposedly,it samples EnVogue's debut single "Hold On" Oh, ok. I thought "Hold On" sampled James Brown's "The Big Payback," if that's the case, itwould be a sample of that song. I hear the similiarities in TBP and Gett Off, but I don't think P used a direct sample. LL also sampled TBP on Boomin' Systems, along with a slew of other artist in the 90's, like Silk's "Happy Days." [Edited 9/15/06 5:40am]

According to Uptown's The Vault, it does indeed use a sample from EnVogue's "Hold On" the rest of the song being a solo performance by Prince. Prince has used sampled beats several times in songs; I don't see why Prince should be slated for it when sampling songs is the backbone of hip hop and rap, they couldn't exist without it. In the end, it's still a new song, there's no doubt Prince could come up with a beat like that on his own, but he simply uses all the tools available to get what he wants as quickly as possible.

En Vogue wasn't even around when Prince made 'Gett Off'.

Yes they were. They came out in 1990. The Diamonds and Pearls album was release in 1991.

U guys are reaching. Drum samples are used ALL the time in production work. Especially in the current state of music where a lot of songs are basic LOOPED patterns.

So alot of prince's greatest beats weren't even his own?

So alot of prince's greatest beats weren't even his own? What is it about your opsession with finding samples in Prince's music? And of course they are his own.

So alot of prince's greatest beats weren't even his own? Well, depends on what you mean by "greatest." "Tick, Tick, Bang," for example, uses a loop from Jimi Hendrix's "Little Miss Lover." I think "Release It" used another, too.

Can you say that for these pop artists today?

i was thinking about this today. i think prince got lazy with drum patters around 1990/1989. D&P really lacks the genius prince drum machine stuff. thunder and push aren't really that amazing beats. it feels like since then he's never really loved them again. the best i can think of is madrid 2 chicago adn strange but true

So alot of prince's greatest beats weren't even his own? I don't think u understand the type of sampling that is used in production work. It's quite different from taking snippets of other people's tracks and using it. There are 1000's of smapled cd's sold just for the sole purpose of building the basic outlines of songs.

As you say, Prince has used Several samples in his songs, I don't know the complete list, but as has been said Gett Off (En Vogue), Tick, Tick, Bang (Hendrix), a snippet of Tower of Power's 'Squibcakes' on Sleep Around AND Release It and a snippet of Ice Cube's 'What Can I Do' on Mr. Happy... I'm sure there are others. In the hundreds of songs Prince has created without samples, less than half a dozen don't add upto much. I think saying 'a lot' of Prince's beats weren't his own is mis-representing the facts. [Edited 9/15/06 9:31am]

Well....if Prince sampled that En Vogue song, then the music is really from James Brown. "Hold On" includes a sample of "Payback" by JB. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

Well it was the first album where he is backed by the NPG and the "purple sound" is noticably gone. I don't think it was laziness, just a different direction in music. He used live drums as opposed to a machine. Christian Zombie Vampires

It's beginning to sound like En Vogue's entire career was based around JB's Payback!

I noticed this too. Darn near every thread he starts is about how P stole something from someone or something. All of it being old news and he always seems to try and re-write the story behind what actually happened. [Edited 9/15/06 16:00pm] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
