This song is amazing and i thought damn Prince has produced a great beat but it's taken form an en vogue song(uncredited)

I thought "Hold On" sampled James Brown's "The Big Payback," if that's the case, itwould be a sample of that song. I hear the similiarities in TBP and Gett Off, but I don't think P used a direct sample.

LL also sampled TBP on Boomin' Systems, along with a slew of other artist in the 90's, like Silk's "Happy Days."

According to Uptown's The Vault, it does indeed use a sample from EnVogue's "Hold On" the rest of the song being a solo performance by Prince. Prince has used sampled beats several times in songs; I don't see why Prince should be slated for it when sampling songs is the backbone of hip hop and rap, they couldn't exist without it. In the end, it's still a new song, there's no doubt Prince could come up with a beat like that on his own, but he simply uses all the tools available to get what he wants as quickly as possible.

En Vogue wasn't even around when Prince made 'Gett Off'.

U guys are reaching. Drum samples are used ALL the time in production work. Especially in the current state of music where a lot of songs are basic LOOPED patterns.

i have to ask the same. with the way you are asking you would think Prince would have faced a barage of lawsuits but I have not heard of any such suits being made. in this day and age where almost nothing is original from these youngs artists, why chase down Prince of all people? i'm sure Prince uses samples, but he also follows up with his own creativity. i was thinking about this today. i think prince got lazy with drum patters around 1990/1989. D&P really lacks the genius prince drum machine stuff. thunder and push aren't really that amazing beats. it feels like since then he's never really loved them again. the best i can think of is madrid 2 chicago adn strange but true

Well....if Prince sampled that En Vogue song, then the music is really from James Brown. "Hold On" includes a sample of "Payback" by JB.

I don't know about "Hold On", but "Never Gonna Get It (My Lovin')" by En Vogue samples JB'S Payback.

Well it was the first album where he is backed by the NPG and the "purple sound" is noticably gone. I don't think it was laziness, just a different direction in music. He used live drums as opposed to a machine.
