Songs Grafitti Bridge and Ladder Attempts at another Purple Rain?

Do you think Prince set out to try to make another Purple Rain type tune with these two? I always thought so. Does the creative genius ever get writers block? What other songs sound like copies to you?

When Doves Cry and Thieves In The Temple though I wouldn´t say that the latter is a copy of the first song. I like both but I prefer When Doves Cry.

Even Prince himself once admitted that it´s normal that sometimes he repeats himself ( during that interview with the Electrifying Mojo (?) ) ...

It´s normal, his songs still sound amazingly diverse when you look at his whole body of work.

I always felt the song Gold was more of an attempt at a PR type track than the two you mentioned. It has that kinda anthemic lighters in the air kinda feel. shrug

i think Still Would Stand All Time if anything is the follow up to Purple Rain its like The Kid wins with another ballad.
I'm an org elitist... totally unapproachable.

I doubt The Ladder was an attempt at another Purple Rain, given how insistent he was on not making Purple Rain pt. II with ATWIAD. Perhaps he just felt that albums needed at least one slow, epic track - see Free in 1999 prior to PR.

Still Would Stand All Time? It is the same archetypically in Graffiti Bridge in that it is The Kids 'saviour song', but musically it's so different from PR that he couldn't have been trying for another. Which leaves Gold, which as far as I'm concerned is a totally different track to Purple Rain.. even more epic in my opinion. Na na na na na na na na naaaaa....

Say what you will about me, but these are two of the worst songs P has ever made

but I'm now a big fan of his "Purple-Rain style ballads"

Now that I think about it, it does have that kind of feel. I like Still Would Stands All Time though. He sings in his high register alot and it's nice to hear him take it down a few notches like he does on this tune.

i agree with soulyacolia... GOLD was an attempt

and then there is "3 chains of gold" which was his knock off of "Bohemian rhapsody"

Now how do you suppose he thought he could get under the radar with that one?
