Party Up is also one of my favorite socially conscious songs. And God there was a terrible war during the 1980s--Remember not just the actual wars in the East or Central America or South Africa--Angola, etc, but the ominous Cold War. Why everybody had a bomb? But I agree with your first point. "Todo está bien chévere" Stevie

i guess the whole potato-salad-out-of-gob thing stems from P's attitude towards nasty global situations being best solved/protested against by partying and shagging.....
"As bombs explode around us and hate advances on the right The only thing that matters, baby, is the love that we make 2night As little babies in make-up terrorize the western world The only thing that matters, baby, is love between a boy and girl...". Little babies in makeup? Nope, lost me there. I thought makeup was against the common young terrorist's religion.... Unless P is admitting to being a terrorist himself...

Nobody mentioned "Family Name" from The Rainbow Children. This song is in similiar vein to "Black Man" from Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie. First off, the great drumming by John Blackwell, Prince's bass playing on the song with the distrotion pedals really showed his unique use of bass, distortion and the opening monologue was interesting. "In other words one cannot serve to masters" is a cliche but it reminded of a Prince-ism from the mid-90s "if you don't own your masters, the master owns you". Classic! 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

I listen to When Will We Be Paid a lot, but I think Prince was just jumpin' in on the band wagon during all the hype on reparations for blacks . . . .
