Didn't Morris Day give Prince Party Up in exchange for him setting up The Time and Having Morris as the front man. I also think it might have just been the bassline or something.

This is pretty much what I've always read also. Not sure were the "stolen" accusation came from.

i dont know anything about him stealing ideas for songs or stealing actual songs, but i think it would b reasonable to presume that he is not unlike many other artists ( like madonna ) who combine a whole bunch of other peoples ideas and make them their own and put them out there for the general public as a reflection of the collective idea as one solid idea, in regards to artistic themes, business themes and marketing ideas, making millions of dollars from them and forgetting to pay the people from whom they got their original ideas.

Madonna lost a court case for doing this with the art of someone else. She took the idea, made it her own, and didnt credit the source. He sued her and won.

There may be people in this world who dont mind handing over ideas, and expect nothing in return, but perhaps they 'notice' which artists do the right thing by them and those who don't.

Now if music were free, and nobody was taking any money for anything, there wouldnt be a problem. Money alone, is always the problem. imo.

Er, quite a lot of people earn a living from writing songs. If music were free...what a load of bullshit.

Purple Rain. Alledgedly Wendy and Lisa composed, produced, and performed all the tracks themselves. Prince was not involved in the project until the very end when he stole it from W & L and claimed it for himself. nuts

Would you mind telling me where the free music is? Last time I looked in HMV, they had price tags on all music items. So if I nick it, is that OK because it should be free?

I will test out your theory today and report back to you from the police station.

lol. the internet. and gigs where bands r giving away their CD's for free. word on the street is, most 'popular artists' in the commercial industry today, get most of their ideas from 'underground'... and sell em, introducing the money problem. the Innovators remain largely anonymous ( compared to commercial fame ). eg: MJ took the moonwalk from street dancers, Madonna took Vogue'ing from the clubs, the list goes on.. heart

What are you on about with money polluting the picture? This is an unbelievable naive opinion you're espousing.

What bands are giving their CDs away for free? Usually unsigned ones who couldn't get arrested. The internet? Most "free" music is being downloaded illegally.

Michael Jackson's "moonwalk" has its origins in jazz/tap dance (there's film of Bill Bailey doing it in 1955).

Innovators are rarely ever successful anyway.

You completely miss my main point which is that it's a means of making a living. Anybody giving away what they create for free either is comfortable finanically or is crap! If you did music for a living, you might feel differently. Would you do a gig for nothing? Would you let someone use one of your songs and be cool with not getting royalties?

Maybe you could pass me some of whatever you're smoking.
