How do Lesbians feel about the song BAMBI ?

if ur a lesbian or u've got friends who r, do u think Prince could convert you or your friends?

i understand the song may not be about that, but if it were, could he make u straight?

I'm not a Lesbian, but I play one on TV...er no. I remember showing the lyrics to a lesbian friend when I was in high school 20 years ago. She thought the lyrics were tedious. I agree with her, still. They reflect a common male misogyny and self absorbtion. The later T.C Ellis version trys to mask that misogyny in christian morality, but basically the song is disespectful to lesbians. You kind of get the idea that he wanted to write a racy song about the 'titilating' subject of lesbians and due to his lack of complex thinkig on the subject, "Bambi" is what he came up with.

"Bambi, can't you understand?
Bambi, it's better with a man?"

Of course the semi-obvious subtext of this statement is that Prince himself knows how much better it is with a man via his own sexual experiences with men. His own heterosexism and discomfort with his own queer sexuality and transgressive gender performance leads him to project this false duel between hetero-normativity and gay sexuality onto Lesbians.

Wow, thanks for ur response. Cool. I posted this question cuz I received some spam mail today - sender: confide. subject: bambi. I'd never seen the lyrics before ( not a hard core fan - moderate ), and at first glance I thought he was just doing his usual 'im the best lover in the whole entire universe' routine, and pushed the envelope by saying it to a lesbian. Then I wondered about the spiritual side of it; I'm male and female in spirit, but I'm heterosexual. Anyway, it felt like he was trying to appeal to the 'girly girl' (in me) or the 'woman' or whatever, not to say Lesbians arent women or that they cant be girly girls lol.. so yeah, I didnt really know how to feel about it.

When I read the lyrics, it feels like a woman speaking like a man. Wierd song. Thanks again for ur super cool response. heart

Whats tedious is this calling Prince gay nonsense. As bold as he is, if he was gay, hed tell you. You wouldnt have to wonder or speculate. Stop projecting. Thats some tired, tedious shit.

what is he trynna do with this song? is he serious?

there's been a couple of gay men i've met before, and i've thought wow damn shame, and far as i got in my head to try and convert them was thinking stuff like 'they wont know love til i've loved them' or ' i bet i could win u over with my heart' (disclaimer: im not saying anything about gay men here, just my personal experiences so dont nobody go all defensive on me)...but i never presumed to try to convince them that my vagina would be more attractive to them, or that they should try it cuz it looks different or that its the only thing that could give them real pleasure.

has Prince always been like that? like, so desperate he even wants to make out to lesbians that his dick would give them more pleasure than another womans tongue or fingers or strap on or whatever? lol

im hetero so y'know, a penis suits me just fine, but lawd Prince wtf? lol

the only sense i can make out of this song is if i interpret it spiritually, then it takes on a whole new meaning, to me anyway.

Yeah well Prince always seems like the type of person who is very confident (yet insecure) and he seems like the type like he knows what is best for everybody. I just think sometimes when you want a person bad enough (like how he wants the girl in this song) you just are trying to convince yourself as much as them that you are what they are looking for. Not a knock against lesbians neccesarily just a suitor trying to hype himself up.

i guess i can have compassion for that but my feeling on it at the moment is hmpf neutral

spiritually though, i like the idea of him saying 'let ur love be feminine'.

"I'm not a lesbian, but I play 1 on TV"...that kills me!
I'm sensing some homo-eroticism right here in this thread.lol

Ha! I was pondering this the other day...now I know. I guess...kind of.

You ever notice how he thanked "Bambi" in the liner notes? Think this song was based on a true experience? hmmm
