A question about Prince & copyright???

As you know I am planning to cover some Prince songs as part of a Tribute to Prince. The downloads will be free & I will not make any profit.

Does anyone know if this is ok & if not, is there an address I write to for obtaining permission???

Thanx

God bless

Lewis

No...this is a big no-no. U must get some type of response from Prince. Everytime a song is copywrited, the artist (or the creator) of the song renews the copyright every 7 years. That's what happened w/ the Beatles. That's why MJ owns the rights. As far as I know...Prince re-news his copyrights. I am a Poet, and a songwriter. I belong 2 ASCAP. This is the policy as I as a writer understand it.

The one thing you have to be careful about when you plan on distributing your free music over the internet is that, someone can compile your recordings and sell them. So eventhough your intent is not to profit from your covers, profit can still be made, which in turn creates the potential for legal issues.

You might want to give the Warner bros a holler before you do your thing.

Actually, you need to contact Universal music group. Warner Bros. no longer publishes Prince's music.

Actually you need to contact the Harry Fox Agency. You can record and sell ANY cover you want too, you just have to give credit where it is due. The thing with MJ owning the Beatles stuff, just means he has the right to sell it for commercial use like NIKE. Its a small fee you have to pay in order to release it for profit. But Harry Fox is your man.
