i'ma go ahead and say "partyup", but with caution...two reasons why i'm being cautious with my choice:
1) the lyrics were rather...well, cornball. it was the first example of his tendency to being capable of/able to speak out on social issues, but he goes and opens his mouth and potato salad falls out. his heart was in the right place, but still...it sounded a bit like it'd sound better in his own head. 2) it's kinna awkward, as it's an anti-war sentiment but it was 1980 and there wasn't a war going on. it was a titch different than, say, right now; there's a big-assed war going on here in 2006. this would be a perfect separate thread, actually: if the world climate were around the same back in '80 as it is now, you gotta wonder: would "partyup" be a lot more different...nay, stronger/louder (not sound-wise, but content-wise) than the version of "partyup" as we know it? edits are such a fuckin' bore [Edited 9/11/06 16:57pm]

I'm really glad you said this...I think it's on point. It really hit me last spring..remember when Bush visited Stanford and there was a shitload of protesting? I was in the middle of all of it and watching people march and chant with their posters and signs I just could not get Party Up out of my head. I mean chanting, "Yer gonna hafta fight yer own damn war, 'cause we don't wanna fight no more!!!" would have been a helluva lot better than, "Hey hey ho ho, Bush is here, he's got to go." So to answer your question, yeah I think it would be stronger, louder because, like you said, there's an actual war going on now so I'm sure if he were to write PartyUp today, he'd have a lot more to say. Fuck...that rhymed. Oh well. [Edited 9/11/06 17:08pm]

[Edited 9/11/06 17:08pm] and yeah, the "you're gonna have to fight your own damn war..." chant would be perfect for the protests that go on now. i remember right before the iraq war started a few years ago, i was moonlighting at a wrecka sto over in uptown. one day there was an anti-war march that passed by the storefront. the owner of the store had a couple of speakers that he set outside of the store and he played john lennon's "give peace a chance" on the turntable he had inside. i thought about asking 'im to put the copy of dirty mind on and playing "partyup" but then i decided not to, simply because the lyrics weren't quite that strong.

Seriously, not a bad pick on top of valid reasons behind it. Ya, Party Up is a great pick...but I think it'd be hard to choose another really good one from DM. It's def. more self-conscious than socially conscious.

Fuck...that rhymed. Oh well. [Edited 9/11/06 17:08pm] The Cold War (Russian: Холодная Война Kholodnaya Voina) was the protracted geopolitical, ideological, and economic struggle that emerged after World War II between capitalism and communism, centering around the global superpowers of the United States and the Soviet Union, and their military alliance partners. It lasted from about 1947 to the period leading to the collapse of the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991. Between 1985 and 1991 Cold War rivalries first eased and then ended. The global contest was popularly named The Cold War because open hostilities never occurred between the United States and the Soviet Union. Instead, the "war" took the form of an arms race involving nuclear and conventional weapons, networks of military alliances, economic warfare and trade embargos, propaganda, xenophobia, espionage, and proxy wars, especially those involving superpower support for opposing sides within civil wars. The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 was the most important direct confrontation, together with a series of confrontations over the Berlin Blockade and the Berlin Wall. The major civil wars polarized along Cold War lines were the Greek Civil War, Korean War, Vietnam War and the Soviet-Afghan War, along with more peripheral conflicts in Angola, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. The greatest fear during the Cold War was the risk it would escalate into a full nuclear exchange with hundreds of millions killed. Both sides developed a deterrence policy that prevented problems from escalating beyond limited localities. Nuclear weapons were never employed as weapons during the Cold War. The Cold War cycled through a series of high and low tension years (the latter called Détente). It ended in the period between 1989 and 1991, with the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact and later the Soviet Union. Historians continue to debate the causes in the 1940s, and the reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1980s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_War Ronnie talk 2 Russia ring a bell?

that don't really count as a war, in my eyes. Oh? Why not? What constitutes a 'war' 2 U (and Ur eyes)? U wont C no graphic images of the most important and influential wars being fought, right under our noses. Believe nothing of what U hear, and only half of what U C, cuz sometimes, even Ur own eyes play tricks on ya.
