I was hanging out with a friend of mine that plays keys, guitar, and drums, and we got into a discussion about the track "Darling Nikki" from Purple Rain. He was explaining to me (someone who has no musical ability other than pressing play on a CD player), the nuances and brilliance of that track. We were both talking about our deep love for the song and he was saying that he actually feels that it is arguably the best track on the album. Then we got into this discussion about how amazing the guitar work and Prince's drumming are on the track. Prince's vocals are in fine form on this track as well ranging from somber, to empassioned, to downright screaming. Sadly most people only remember the song for the Tipper Gore reference to the "masturbation" lyric. This track is Prince at his minimalist, vocal and instrumental best.
