What the hell could he say. I gaped at my friend next to me at the outpouring at prince. It was very interesting to watch. I never said a word to him. What could I say? I just watched him carry on politely but a bit uncomfortable.
Sounds like a twisted version of confession. Was security and a doctor standing by? I saw a similar thing at the first celebration. Prince would come in and go behind the sound board area and fans would flock around it and STARE at him NON STOP. so much so that Prince would eventually turn his back and look at the wall. I mean STARE like he was a zoo animal..it was quite sad really and I learned right then and there...that as much as I wanted to just look at him, I wouldn't, out of respect for him. Sure I'd steal a glance from time to time but..that's it. I really wonder sometimes if this is where the whole story about "don't look him in the eyes" came about...people are just in awe of him and do not realize how rude they are being. "not a fan" yeah...ok

he responded in interesting & different ways at each encounter. months later I would hear the sound & reaction to each episode. always waiting for the next, I anticipate what I see.

His response would be to pick up his pace and walk quickly past me while looking at the floor to avoid eye contact.
Me: Prince! Hi Prince! Gosh it sure is great to see... Prince: *walk, walk, walk, walk* Me: Uh okay I just wanted to say... Prince: *walkwalkwalkwalkwalk*

I know what you mean about the staring thing...I was at the Saturday show in Vegas back in May. During sound-check P must have had a good laugh watching everyone stampede to the stage when we were let in. We could all hear him in the mic but didn't notice where he was till we were all in there for a while. We all turned around to see him sitting in a booth right behind us! As soon as people were noticing him he looked VERY uncomfortable. I passed up what would have been my opportunity to meet him after coming out of the ladies room. He was still sitting in the booth and I was shocked to see there were no fans gathered around him and I didn't notice where the bodyguards were. As I approached to go by him to get back to my spot in the crowd I figured this would be my one and only chance to have a look at him this up close without him really knowing...yea right..., but as I came closer to him he turned and looked directly at me. He had a mild expression and appeared to be more relaxed...the first thing that popped into my head was, "I will not stare!!, I have to show this man some respect!!, I will be a good girl!!", so I gave him a pleasant expression turned away and proceeded into the crowd. When he looked at me I just wanted to treat him like a normal person because I felt that by sitting in the crowd like that he wanted to be treated like everyone else. I was proud of myself. First close encounter was pittsburgh 88.
After the show me anda friend went to this hotel where some of the entourage was headed. After a bit we where hangin outside 1 or 2 am no one around. Around the corner , by himself, he comes walkin by wearing the kiss jacket. Only thing I could muster up was 'how u doin" and he kept going , looking down, without a response. I think there was a slight smile.

My nephew met him once , around the years of SOTT and Lovesexy .
He traveled with a group to most of the European city's where P performed . On one day they were spotted by one of P's roadies when they had a drink on a terrace near the Hotel where P stayed . It was their lucky day , cause apparently the roadie was in a good mood and asked : " Y'all wanna meet Prince ? .... come at that hours to the hotel-lobby " The were escorted to a chique decorated room of the hotel . After waiting for a little time while chatting , they suddenly felt the presence , and there he was . That's how my nephew described it ... he shook his hand , thanked him for this opportunity and complimented his shows he had visited so far . Prince thanked him for that . Brenda , a cool soulsista i know from downsouth , met him a few years back in the lounge of the Essence Soul Music Fest in New Orleans . She said hi and told he looked great . He was very laidback and complimented her as well . No deep conversations but at least some cool meetings . . . [Edited 9/9/06 9:51am]

I guess it depends on the environement and what's going on at the time. My one close enough to talk to him experience came back in 1998, I think. Mayte was doing premiering her ballet at the Detroit Music Hall and Prince was there to support her.
I went to the bathroom during intermission and stay behind at the bar because I hate long ass lines. Anyway, when I finally went back to see the show, the doors were closed and there was some big security guy holding them shut. I pulled on the doors and he pulled back. I pulled again with a little more force. He stuck his head out and said, "No admittance." I said, "Bullshit! I have a ticket and I've seen half of it and will be seeing the other half unless you're giving me a refund! He gave me one of those 'damn women' looks and opened the door and let me just step inside but told me I couldn't go any further. Before I could begin to curse, I turned to my left and who did I see not 3 feet away from me...the man himself...standing behind Mayte! Our eyes met and he smiled. Just as I was fixing my lips to say, "Hi!" Mr. Mean Ass Security Guard grabbed my arm and moved me down the stairs towards my seat. We were sitting about 7 rows from the back so when I got to my seat I told my friends that Prince was behind us. When they all turned around, they could only see Mayte because Prince had ducked behind her. They turn to me and take my drinkand tell me that my drinks are cut off. I turn again by myself and Prince leans out from behind Mayte and smiles again. I tell my friends, "See he's right there!" Of course they turn and he's gone again. They make me hand over my keys. I turn again and sure enough he sticks his head out again and smiles at me. I'm so enjoying this. I say, "Look!" And again he's gone! No one believes me! I turn again by myself and he smiles and gives me the shh sign, so I just laughed and turned back around. As we're leaving when the show is over, we passed the green room and sure enough Prince was there for all my friends to see but Mr. Mean Ass Security Guard didn't buying my story of the Princely connection that I made wouldn't let us in.

All I could do was yell out" He just walked passed us", and joke about that he was close enough I could reach out and touch him; which I wouldn't dare only to have security throw me to the ground.

I don't know his response, but I walked right by him once and I didn't notice (he was around the corner, so I didn't see him coming towards me).
But he had to notice me because my co-worker said I walked a just a couple feet in front of him, and you know he didn't want any contact with a yucky regular guy. "Eww, he might have even been a fan!" a few minutes later I saw him out the window, gold lame suit w/cape. My Legacy
