1999--(the second time around)--did you get caught up again like it was ALMOST the 80's again?

when 1998 was coming to a close, a lot of radio stations strated playing 1999 again in their regular rotations (even though the song is about the year 2000)...it was everywhere--r&b stations, pop stations...it even re-charted on billboard. did you take a moment to reflect back on your crazy 80's days and how much it all changed as you got older?

NOTE: THE 1999 NEW MASTER DOES NOT EXIST IN THIS THREAD mad

I remember being at a rave 1998/1999 and they played it at midnight. The whole place was dancing!

nope. the only buzz about the song i knew about was that it was supposed to be the theme of my senior prom (i graduated in '99--how original it was to have "1999" as the prom theme, i know lol)...the friggin dj didn't even play the song! i remember being at prom and at the end of the night i was like "wtf, they didn't play it! what a gyp!!!!" evil

as far as "1999" being played on des moines radio stations back then, i didn't listen to the mainstream stuff so i haven't a clue if it got played or not. i'm thinking that it probably did. and as far as reminiscing back to the '80s upon hearing the track, i can't help ya with a testimonial, since i was between 1 and 2 years old when the album was popular.

Yes I did, and I was happy that Prince was gonna get recognition for the song all over again, how ahead of his time he was!

I thought something big was going down that year that everybody would notice, like 911. Something big did go down but it went basically unnotice!

I've still yet to understand what bugass delusions he was under making that crap. If you were to tell me that was made by prince without me already knowing it, I'd not want to believe you.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

I did. I just brought the 1999 on CD for the first time a few weeks before the new year in 98 and when 98 ended, I played that song a lot. Hell I played that album a lot in 99! I even played the song before 2000 started. That was a cool time.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The only person playing "1999" in my area in the year 1999 was me. All I heard coming from people's speakers was boring shit hop. In 1982, I never dreamed the year 1999 would be so boring. I envisioned us throwing down hard to futuristic sounding funk like the "1999" album and Soul Sonic Force/Jonzun Crew/Planet Patrol spacey type funk. Instead, the music of 1999 turned out to be slow enough to fucking waltz to.

Playing 1999 in 1999 was patheic. Why?

"Were going to party like it's 1999"

Well I hope so...

see my point?

I've always wondered if Prince knew what he was doing when he wrote that song. Sure in 1982, it was funky and a hit (I guess--I was 10), but did he realize that when the actual year 1999 came about and especially on New Year's Eve that year that it would be playing everywhere? I mean that was excellent future promotion for him.

And did he also realise, that 'come' 2000, it would never b played again?

listen to this.
every day is judgement day
followed by between 4-10 hours of sleep
then u get to do it all over again
and try not to make the same mistakes
when u keep making the same ones over and over
pain comes to teach u to stop
self-inflicted pain
and there's no one to blame but urself

i was dreaming when i wrote this
forgive me if it goes astray
but when i woke up this morning
coulda sworn it was judgement day

some people say and do things for reasons unbeknownst to the naked eye
and some people see beyond, and say and do things to help
there's an act of love far greater than romantic gratification
it stalks and it hunts and it kills iniquity
ravenously bluntly all-consumingly
the blind cry 'help! help!'
the seers say 'thank u'.

the sky is all purple
people running
everywhere
trying to run from the destruction of their iniquities
those who dont care about their own salvation
would rather party
than face their iniquities
and b grateful
its too hard for them

say 2000 zero zero
party over
oops
out of time.
tonite im gunna party like its
999

666 is the pivot point
from evil to good
it takes courage, honesty and self-respect to change
anything less
and u get wiped out

party over
oops
out of time

there's a lion in my pocket
and baby
she's ready to roar
would u like the sound of music
or thunder
all through the night

one incorrect presumption and its
party over
oops
out of time

there's nothing u can b ready for
cuz when u get there
everything changes again
and so on
and so on
and so on

to me, Chris, communicating is a sacred process, full of little twists and turns that make it so very interesting. playing the game at face-value shows shallowness in the soul, blindness in the eye, hardness in the heart, revealing an inner self that doesnt know love.

if u know love, show it.
never u mind trying to figure out the way my mind works
or whats inside my heart.
ur human.
u never will.
