You can love a movie and still acknowledge that it's utter garbage...

It may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but I have seen much worse. As for the storyline it may be a bit corny but it is sweet too.

lol sexxydancer you make me feel so normal in my Prince obsession! biggrin

Seriously, I purchased GB a few months back and I just could not get into it - the story had too much going on, the dark sets, Ingrid as a lead was not doing it for me, the acting was poor as well. However, Prince looked sooooo yummy in that movie. I watched the E&F and Tick Tick Bang performances over and over again. And there is one scene where he is walking with Ingrid after ridig the motorcyle and the wind blows his hair- whew, save me! biggrin

GB actually had some great music. I absolutely love some of the songs from it.

My favs were:

NPG
The Question of U
Joy in Repetition
We Can Funk
Tick Tick Bang
Thieves (such a tease though, the remix just set it off!!)
Can't Stop
E&F

These are all awesome songs to me.
perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

I just rented GRAFFITI BRIDGE, and I'm about to watch it for the first ever time!

I'm very excited - I loved PURPLE RAIN and UNDER THE CHERRY MOON.

I know GB gets a bad rep, but so does PR and UTCM to some extent, and I loved those.

Must admit though, the trailer I've seen for GB does look a *LOT* cheaper production values than PR or UTCM. More like a typical Paisley Park produced video extended.

Agreed. This movie is terrible.'UTCM' was a bad movie too,but it had some redeeming qualities and after all this time,I think many people now feel that it's not so bad after all.But 'GB' is still just as awful as it was when we saw it in (mostly empty) theatres in 1990 lol

Yeah, there was backlash against UTCM because it was nothing like Purple Rain and it was pretty weird at times. But it really wasn't all that bad.

Time judges these movies, and UTCM looks better, Purple Rain (other than the music) looks worse (IMO), but Graffiti Bridge looks exactly the same.

1. Release It
2. Jill Jones - sorry, sexist, but, she's dreamy.
3. Getting Miko to deliver the line, "She's three fine". That's genius.
4. The 'duelling money'.
5. Elephants and Flowers - wonderful Adam Ant retro thang goin' on.
6. Prince's delivery of the "She's two fine" line that prompts Mikos response.
7. Jerome playing a Gameboy while Prince sings Tick Tick Bang. Funny.
8. Tick Tick Bang. I LOVE!
9. Joy in Repetition.
10. (and the only actual good thing to come out of GB) Claude Debussy's "Danse Sacree, Danse Profane". The most moving music. Fooled me at the time. I sat there and thought, "Wow, Prince writes classical stuff too!". Nope. It was Debussy. It IS superb.

what about T.C. Ellis and his Oscar-worthy performance?

"I told you, kid, you should have let me rap!"

"It's just around the corner"

Guys, sorry for the belated response! I only just got around to watching it this afternoon.

Okay, you guys were right - this was shockingly bad sad

I was like WTF! throughout the opening scenes, and then most of the film, and then one major WTF (!!) when the end credits rolled up.

The best way to describe it, I think, is if you take the little acting/story segments from the "Sign O' The Times" concert movie, and made them into a film. I always found those segments from SOTT concert movie really baffling and incomprehensible. Well, Graffiti Bridge just felt like 90 minutes of that.

It was a *very* different experience to when I first saw Purple Rain. In PR, my jaw dropped literally at the musical performances of songs like Darling Nikki, Computer Blue, Let's Go Crazy, I Would Die 4 U. He's so kinetic and plays guitar and piano etc. In GB he's so much more static, and I wasn't all that impressed with any of the musical performances. Even The Time - I've seen much more exciting performances by them in concert footage etc. The lip synching was pretty poor too, especially on Still Would Stand All Time at the end (maybe it was a DVD technical fault?)

I guess there were some things I kinda enjoyed:

- Prince's performance of Thieves in the Temple - that bit that sounded slightly stuttered/remixed was cool.
- Prince's performance of Elephants and Flowers.
- Morris Day's dialogue ("You betta put some treble on that tone Grace or you gonna be pullin' some Stacey Adams outta yo' ass!")
- backing music in some club scenes was from The Time's excellent "Pandemonium" LP (songs like 'Jerk Out').

I also didn't like the fact that this is supposed to be the sequel to Purple Rain. It's not how I pictured the Kid's life turning out when the PR credits rolled up at the end. I don't think I want to associate it with PR in my mind! Purple Rain was set in a real city, a real world, and at least it had a stab at making some sort of statement. This was some sort of surreal neon fake world that just looked like, well, a set. Like the SOTT bits I mentioned before.

Although UTCM gets some stick for not having *enough* musical scenes, at least it integrates it well into the film's story (GIRLS AND BOYS bit is AWESOME!!), whereas GB feels like a long music video. Maybe if Prince had got some outside help from actual film-makers who know how to do this stuff (like PR, and I hear he did it with UTCM too).

The Melody Cool and the Tevin Cambpbell bits were pretty embarrassing now. That's the other interesting thing - just how early 90s now looks more cringeworthy than the 80s stuff. I think PR looks kinda cool and kitsch nowadays, whereas this just looks pretty lame.

Oh well, my Under The Cherry Moon DVD arrived today - I just bought it. Now that movie, I can watch LOADS! I love it. I prefer Prince's playful/flirtatious "Christopher Tracy" persona to his brooding "The Kid" persona anyways.

So now GB is officially my least favourite Prince album and least favourite Prince movie (I guess I reckon it's his nadir!)

1. The Lighting Was Expressive, almost to the extent of a painter painting with light.

2. The stage settings and props were imaginitive and relivant.

3. The distractable items were minimalist.

4. The Costumes were Dramatic and relivant to the charactors.

5. The Graffiti Bridge ( a gateway within the mind of prince to the underdefined heavnly land, built with the steping stones of life, and know as a hidding place for reflection.)

One may say he's hidding at the Graffiti Bridge right now.

geek Correction,...I believe it was actually Jimmy Jam that was playing the Gameboy during the song! I'm going by memory because I've made a complete recovery and don't want to blow it by watching the movie again! duh
