He was supposed to sing on 'We Are The World' but opted out, saying he would have felt intimidated by all those stars and wouldn't have done well in those conditions. After the press gave him a hard time for not joining in, he donated the song '4 The Tears In Your Eyes' for the USA 4 Africa album, though he maintains it was agreed all along.

For Live Aid, he gave a black and white video of him, Lisa & Wendy playing an acoustic '4 The Tears In Your Eyes' which was shown sometime during the American side of the transmission of Live Aid.

"I tried 2 tell them that I didn't want 2 sing
But I'd gladly write a song instead
They said okay and everything was cool
'Til a camera tried 2 get in my bed...

Against hungry children
Our record stands tall
But there's just as much hunger here at home

We'll do what we can
If y'all try and understand..."

Not a great line, I don't think there was quite as much hunger in the USA as in Ethiopia...

one more quickie thing to add ... he did the song for the album ... and he did perform the song "live" on the big screen in from of the audience... it was taped as i recall ... so there was an album version of the song "for the tears in your eyes" and also a LIVE version , correct??? wink

One more point;

Prince lied about telling them he wasn't gonna be there!

Quincy jones said prince never turned up; he rang 2 days later saying 'do you want me to put a guitar riff on the track?' to which quincy replied'no too late'"

This is fact i even had the video where Quincy was explaining this!

hmm ... i cant really see an 'other wordly' artist like Prince gettin down in a lets-all-hug type situation where all that is really achieved is alot of $$$ for the corrupt.....

that aint to say these 'lets help starving folk' recordings aint any good, intention is everything and i believe those folks had their heart in the right place, but Prince? since when has he ever had his HEART in the right place...

he already been divorced twice
lol

He used to do food and clothing drives at his concerts occasionally, so that's not entirely true, if you compare that to a lot of the celebs that would happily sing a line on 'We Are The World' raising their own profile but doing little else, perhaps his record 'does stand tall'.

Don't forget the version on the Hits 3 CD- set.
This is different than the 'USA for Africa' vinyl record version.

About the live version....I can't say anything about that.

I think I'm right in saying the version on The B-sides is the same as the Live Aid video, it's the audio of it, and is a live performance. The USA for Africa version is the studio version. I think.

no... what your talking about is the recording session for the WE ARE THE WORLD PROJECT... lIVE AID was the big concert effort ... and yes Prince DID PERFORM 4 The Tears In Your Eyes VIA SATELITE... it was just Prince, wendy and lisa...

It may have been broadcast via satellite, but it was pre-recorded footage, not a live performance.
