80s Prince comparisons

Why do so many people on this board continue to compare everything that Prince does today to his output in the 80s? The 80s ended nearly 17 years ago! Prince is NOT the same man he was 17 years ago. If he was, it would be a tragedy. It would mean that he had not evolved as a human being.

Are you the same person you were 17 years ago? What about 10 or 5 years ago? As human beings our knowledge, relationships, experiences and lessons learned from them shape who we are as people. Life is a journey toward self. Someone once said that the close we get to ourselves, the farther away we move from others. Maybe that is the case with Prince for some of you who are stuck on 80s Prince.

Prince has had a plethora of experiences since the 80s - some wonderful, some tragic, some life affirming, some life changing and who knows what else. His music reflects phases in his personal journey. He has lived and learned much more since the 80s. His personal paradigm has expanded and shifted as yours will to if you are fortunate enough to live a long life on this planet.

So please quit looking for him to digress. Evolution is about progress. He gave you music in the 80s, if that's what you like listen to it, but don't expect everything to sound like that. The 80s have left the building.

I wonder if we look to the past because at the time he seemed to mold the future? Prince in the 80s revolutionised pop-music. Those of us around at the time may just like that burgeoning creativity to resurface every now and again (like it did, IMO, on TRE).
