Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Yes, it's a masterpiece. I also think it's Prince's last great album ... to date.

Hell NO.

I am one of the very few who don't like this album, 'The Gold Experience'.

Some good tracks, yes, but some unlistenable ones, like, "Now", and "Pussy Control"... Most definately NOT a masterpiece.

Then again... I also didn't like "Diamonds & Pearls"...

I don't mean 2 offend... I mean, if that's how U get your groove on, cool. 'Controversy' is one of my favorite albums, but it doesn't make it one of Prince's "masterpieces"...

U wanna talk "masterpiece"... '1999', 'Parade', 'Sign O The Times', 'Lovesexy', 'The Rainbow Children'...

This shows that Prince has released both thematic and collage styled masterpiece works, as '1999' and 'Sign O The Times' R both collages, and 'Parade', 'Lovesexy', and 'The Rainbow Children' R all thematic.

Peace.

Was The Gold Experience the album that Prince said he would never release? Didnt it have adverts in the media saying To Be Released... Never. Or was that just some rubbish that I heard?

As far as the album goes, it's one of my faves by Prince.
I am Princes love child!

Highly underrated, The Truth, but I don't think it's as good as Gold Experience. But you're talking to someone who thinks Come is a masterpiece too, you know. wink

My 1st taste of G.E. trax was off the Feb94 "My Name Is Now prince" Paisley Park gig bootleg, and the Ultimate Live Experience at Wembley Arena March 1995 (not bootleg I was 4 rows from the front - holy sh*t!!!!). As u can imagine I was a tad disappointed with the eventual release of the album. I'd already spent half a year being haunted by the melody of Empty Room and Same December from the intro vid to the Wembley gig, and with no Days of Wild or Interactive on the final tracklist.... Still, the artwork's better than Chaos and Disorder...

I'm one of those that considers TGE horrendously overrated, although still a decent album.
I like the energy that has been absent ever since, but I think The Truth is a much better collection of songs.

TRC is just... barf

Come? Yeah, I like some of that. smile

The studio Days of Wild - though great - was nowhere near as strong as the live Crystal Ball version. Ripop ... vs We March is a case of interchangeable filler though, no? Ok, Rip is catchier but it's still throwaway.

TGE is one of his best records in the nineties, but i wouldnt call it a masterpiece, but a very good, solid record, a 4 star thing.

Tastes differ, but Prince has made a few 4,5 / 5 star records (9/10, 10/10), a lot of 4 star and 3 star recods, and a few with fewer stars in my opinion. Right now my list looks something like this (excluding the collections, internet-only and fanclub-releases):

4,5 - 5 stars (9 - 10)
Dirty Mind
1999
Purple Rain
Parade
Sign of the Times
Lovesexy

4 stars (8):
Around the world in a day
Batman
Diamonds and Pearls
The Gold Experience

3 - 3,5 stars (6 - 7):
Prince
Controversy (7+)
Graffiti Bridge (7+)
The Symbol Album (7+)
Emancipation
Chaos and Disorder
The Vault: old friends for sale
Musicology
3121

2 - 2,5 stars (4 - 5):
For You
Come
Rave unto the Joy Fantastic
The Rainbow Children

1 - 1,5 stars (1 - 3):
New Power Soul

* note: the ones 7+ might are on the edge of the 4 star and 3 - 3,5 star category.

When Prince "Dolphin" on the David Letterman show, Letterman explained that
prince is here to promote the Gold Experience CD and held it up for the camera.

He added, "I've been told that this particular CD will never be released, so it makes perfect sense that he is here promoting it tonight" The crowd laughed.

Letterman made one of his confused faces and then said "Ladies and Gentlemen, do me a favor and please welcome...(after looking on his desk for it, he held up that silly gold symbol) prince. The Artist Formerly Known As Prince". The crowd laughed again.

I hadn't seen him in a while. Did not know what was going on in his career (heard something about and fight with WB). Just remeber how silly it sounded and then I saw the Slave scrawled on his face...well it just came across as infantile.

"Dolphin" rocked though. Prince shot himself in the head at the end of the song. He fell into Mayte's arms and she stroked his right cheek as he lay dying.

She was probably trying to smudge the "Slave" off his face because of embarrassment biggrin

I agree. I know he was really into the whole high tech, mysterious thing, but the album would have been better without them. I think the segues make the album sound more dated.

To me, the Gold Experience was like taking the prince symbol album and improving upon the hip hop elements, stripping out the ridiculous plot, and adding a healthy dose of "umph". It's terrific.

I love love love the symbol album, but the Gold Experience is a bit better. For some reason, I don't listen to it as often--I think it's becuase the songs on gold are so deliberately likeable that it slightly annoys me. lol
