i think it genuinely was a spiritual thing as well as business (he never hid the fact it was also for business reasons) at the time. all the "spirit" stuff he said during his symbol period seemed fairly genuine, and the symbol was around in a less elaborate form long before he started having serious problems with warner bros (i.e. the nude tour, if not before that). i think implying it was entirely business in his 2000 press conference was just an attempt to cover up something he now realized had actually been kinda silly.
