Why are we so interested in his album charting and how much its selling, Only Prince should worry about that!

Emancipation {3 million Sold} debut# 11 Pop Charts, #6 r/b
Rave {1 million Sold} debut #18 Pop Charts, #9 r/b
Rainbow Children (? Sold) # 107 Pop Charts ???

you all have to remember, for Emancipation that was fantastic, being a triple disc set and selling 3 million copies in a 4 month period, and also having 3 videos w/ not much hype from the record label, except for its release month.
The Oprah show, today, rosie and The Emancipation Celebration Broadcast. It was stated by billboard the fastest selling triple disc set in history.

Plus the Tour.

Rave did considerably well for not much promotion at all, no video and only 1 interview, prior to its release.

Rainbow Children, did well for an indie release, no videos and no record company...he promoted to the hardcore fans and basically gave it away for free 1 month b4 its release.
W/ Commercials. It was stated by Billboard the best selling Indie release, debuting # 4 on Billboards Indie charts!
and a number #1 single in japan for "Last December".

Prince just need a marketing and promotions team and he'll be ok, if he wants to get back into the game and the charts!

Emancipation crushes those other non contenders. 3 cd set, mostly solo Prince jammin in the studio. There was sex, there were jams, there were soft ballads, there was everything for real lovers of Prince and his music. You might not like every song, but he gave something to EVERYBODY with that joint. Anyone can chop it down to one single cd of just the songs that YOU like.

When the tours are over, the videos are gone, interviews are over, you will still be able to this set out and say 'WOW, this cat is hot!'

Emancipation DID NOT sell 3 million copies. There were 1 million copies printed (each sale counting as 3 for purposes of the charts). Of the million copies that were printed he has sold around 700,000 meaning the album is double platinum. This is why you can now find Emancipation in every bargain bin because there are still like 300,000 copies that have yet to sell. Emancipation is certified "Double Platinum"

Rave sold around 600,000 worldwide (Rave is certified Gold) and TRC has sold less then 200,000 copies.

mmmn, no, i think u will find its sold 3million and it went triple platinum as prince has verified this at various times, ie the VH1 interview with Chris Rock!! and if the discs were counted individually that means that michael jacksons history album which sold 7 million in the US actually sold 14million and 26million worldwide i dont think so.

Click on the following link to the RIAA website to see that "Emancipation" is indeed certified as "double platinum".

Emancipation RIAA

Here is a link to the rules changes which explain how each cd in a multi-disc set count as one unit.

rules

Here is the relevent text from the page:
1992 Multi-box sets are redefined as two or more CDs (or the equivalent in LPs or cassettes) with a minimum running time of 120 minutes. The criteria are also changed so that each unit within a set is counted separately. The criteria for a Gold multi-box set now require sales of 500,000 units; Platinum, one million units; and Multi-Platinum, two million units.

So basically if you say that "History" sold 7 million copies in reality it sold 3.5 million copies.

...and just for fun click on this link to see how Prince's album sales compare to other artist's records sales.

http://www.riaa.com/Gold-Best-4.cfm

He only needs to sell 130,000,000 more albums and he could be number one. eek

Does anyone else find it sad that right above him for sales are Journey and Willie Nelson?

Emancipation sold 3 million units only if you count each individual CD, which your misleading statistics do. The actual sales figures were much lower - no one could buy just disc one, afterall.

Settle down. I think you will find Prince mis-cites facts, exaggerates realities, makes erroneous claims, and outright LIES when it suits him.

If you go to http://www.riaa.com/Gold-Intro-2.cfm and search for "Prince" and "Emancipation", you will find the album is double-platinum ("Multi Platinum 2.0"), counting each disc.

mayb worldwide sales for emancipation were 3million, that is possible! its great that it did so well with so little promo, and history has sold 15 million worldwide michael jackson has stated that this actually means 30 million sales so mayb u r right! man i just realised that that means history is like tha 2nd biggest selling album ever, is that right? ps the RIAA's figures havent been updated in ages! there is no way prince has only sold 36 million albums if PR sold 13 and say his other 30 albums sold an average of 1.5-2million that would mean closer 2 50million! and michael jackson is at 58 million errm thriller 26million, off the wall 7 million, bad 13 million, dangerous 12 million history 7million invincible 2 million blood on the dancefloor 1million plus all those compilation cd's and rereleases that adds up 2 at least 75 million, madonna's figures r shit as well!

I don't think the RIAA sales figures is correct for any artist, for one thing, do they count the figures of artists old albums that sells today? A lot of artists have old albums that will sale more albums now than when it did 20 years ago. Do they quit counting the album sales figures after the first year it came out? I seriously think RIAA sales figures on albums is no where near correct, it isn't possible to track every album sales in the world. I don't believe the sales figures on any album.

Prince, ha, right up there with Foreigner and Chicago. Prince sells the same as two bands that are no longer together and have put any cds out since the 80's

Okay, do you just make up numbers without paying any attention to fact?

Officially Michael Jackson's sales numbers:

Off the Wall = 7 million
Thriller = 26 million
Bad = 8 million
Dangerous = 7 million
History = 7 million
Blood on the Dance Floor = 1 million
History = 7 million
Invinicible = 2 million

These numbers are through January 25, 2002.

Add these up and you get 58 million.

Don't believe me click this link

Michael Jackson

For the record Prince has stated that his worldwide sales are around 50 million so that actually makes sense with the 36 million stated by the RIAA for U.S sales.

those figures u stated r bullshit! 8 million for bad and dangerous and so on, those were the figures like 5 yrs ago i remember reading those figures when history came out in 95 that was more than half a decade ago and before the new remasters and special editions came out! purple rain has been sitting at 13 million 4 years as well! also the US is only one country compared with the rest of the planet, if it has sold 13 million in the US alone and say 7 or 8 million in europe plus 3 million in the rest of the world (canada, australia, japan etc) it must have sold 23 million copies easy! lets just work this out -

controversy, dirty mind, prince and for u 3 million
1999 2 million
purple rain 23 million
atwiad 5 or 6 million
parade 3 million
sott 3 million
lovesexy 2 million
batman 2 million
graffiti bridge 2 million (went no 1 in the uk)
diamonds and pearls 7 million and thats official
symbol 2 million
come 500,000 (went 2 no 1 in the uk)
gold experience 500,000
chaos and disorder no point in even including these sales
emancipation 3 million
nps 1 million
rave 1.5 million
rainbow children 250,000
crystal ball 250,000
plus
the hits1,2,3 3 million
plus
the very best of prince ( dont know the sales figures but charted high in many countries, no 2 in the uk!

= 64 million

With respect LoveMachine. These figures are from the RIAA, Ive been on the site before. So doesnt that mean that those sales stats are from the US only? Meaning that the World Wide figures are alot higher, cuz I could swear ive heard sumwhere that World Wide "Thriller" sold nearly 40 million copies. confused

Sorry if I missed any clarification on this earlier.

those figures u stated r bullshit!

You are so full of shit. You just made up a bunch of numbers from the top of your head. Show me ANY evidence that the above numbers are correct.

Prince himself stated that NPS sold 600,000 worldwide and you have it listed at a million so there is one that is incorrect. Prince has also stated his worldwide sales at around 50 million, not 64 million.

All I ask for is ANY actual evidence. I have provided links to where I got my numbers from so all I ask is the same from you.

Yes the numbers stated are U.S. Sales and I believe that I did mention this earlier. I thought I had heard that Thriller had sold almost 50 million worldwide.

Well they are easily the best selling group of all time.

Click this link to see the total domination they have in this category:

This list puts Prince around #32 for sales in the U.S. which isn't bad at all.

controversy, dirty mind, prince and for u 3 million
1999 2 million -4 - 4.5 million (sold well over 3million in the US alone)
purple rain 23 million - Almost 20 million (Sold approx 14million in US + 5 million elsewhere)
atwiad 5 or 6 million - 5.5 million globaly.
parade 3 million - 3.6 - 3.9 million according 2 Uptown if I remember right.
sott 3 million - 3.5 million.
lovesexy 2 million - 2.8 million at least.
batman 2 million - 5 million (globaly) maybe slightly less.
graffiti bridge 2 million - Hmmm. 2 - 2.5 million.
diamonds and pearls 7 million - Thas about right. Its also the amount SOTT SHOULD have sold.
symbol 2 million - Alot closer to 3 million I'd say. Maybe a little more.
come 500,000 - Cant disagree with that.
gold experience - At least 1.5 million. (no.1 single and 2 other decent hits remember)
chaos and disorder no point in even including these sales
emancipation 3 million - lol I have to agree with Lovemachine with this 1. Even Uptown state that U have 2 divide the amount by 3.
nps 1 million - ?? Not really sure. But I think Uptown said around 500'000.
rave 1.5 million - Less than that, im sure.
rainbow children 250,000 - ...dayum...
crystal ball 250,000 - uh huh.
plus
the hits1,2,3 - I thought it was closer 2 a combined total of 5 million 4 the compilation.
plus
the very best of prince - We'll say at least 1.5 million.

Just changing it according 2 my knowledge and what Ive established from reading TurnItUp.2. smile

Some of these sound right...others sound a little inflated. Hmmm...I might have to research this a little bit if I can find the time.

I think that is actually near impossible to accurately count since Warner Brothers and Prince aren't sharing the numbers. Basically we have to go with what the RIAA and more recently Soundscan say. Worldwide sales are even harder to track.

yeah sum of 'em will be a bit inflated cuz I cant remember the number that I was told/read. And it helps if that number was accurate 2 start with.

What we should do now is estimate the TOTAL amount of everything Prince has sold. Do sum arithmetic with his Total Sales Amount and his Royalty Percentage and work out how much money he has made over the years. biggrin

Any volenteers?

Nearly impossible.

In 1998 MTV said that Prince still made $5 million a year from his back catalogue so he is doing all right I reckon. They said that it had been his most successful year financially and that he had made $23 million dollars.
